May 14, 2015 WACO, Texas - Baylor men's basketball has signed Miami (Fla.) transfer Manu Lecomte to a financial aid contract, head coach Scott Drew announced Thursday. Lecomte will sit out the 2015-16 season and have two years of eligibility starting in 2016-17.
Lecomte (pronounced La-conn-t), a 5-foot-11 point guard from Brussels, Belgium, played 71 games and made 40 starts over two seasons at Miami. He averaged 7.8 points and 2.0 assists in 25.0 minutes per game while shooting 43 percent from 3-point range.
"Manu's an outstanding young man who will really fit in well at Baylor University," head coach Scott Drew said. "He's a high character kid, and he's a great fit for our program, both on and off the court. He's already had success at the DI level and internationally, so we're really excited to see what he'll be able to do in the nation's best conference."
As a sophomore in 2014-15, Lecomte helped Miami to the 2015 NIT championship game posting 18 points in a first-round win vs. North Carolina Central and 17 points in a second-round victory over Alabama. On the season, Lecomte shot 46 percent on 3-pointers (52-of-114), and his 3-point shooting increased to 52 percent (23-of-44) in ACC play.
Lecomte's best game as a sophomore came when he led the Hurricanes to a win at No. 4 Duke, posting 23 points in 28 minutes off the bench. He also had a 20-point game at Virginia Tech among his 14 double-figure scoring games.
As a freshman in 2013-14, Lecomte started 17 times and played 28 minutes per game. Among his 11 games scoring in double figures that season were a season-high 19 points at Maryland and 11 points with a career-high seven assists in a win at North Carolina.
Lecomte also has a wealth of international experience playing for his native Belgium. He led the Belgian team to the Division B championship game of the 2014 FIBA U20 European Championships. Lecomte was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 20.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.1 steals in 30.4 minutes per game.
Baylor returns five of its top seven scorers from last season's 24-10 team, which reached the NCAA Tournament for a second straight year. All-Big 12 forwards Rico Gathers and Taurean Prince return for their senior seasons, as well as rising senior guard Lester Medford. Ishmail Wainright is the lone returning junior, while Johnathan Motley, Al Freeman and T.J. Maston will be sophomores. The Bears also add five players from a nationally-ranked signing class.
