THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas
-- Baylor soccer put together an 8-0 shutout win over UTSA Sunday afternoon at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field. The Bears (3-4-1) used three first-half goals and five in the second to topple the Roadrunners (0-6-1), claiming the Baylor Tournament title.

BU's first goal came in the 12th minute on a penalty kick by Bri Campos. In the 26th minute, Sarah King threaded the needle with a pass to hit Lauren Piercy in stride between two defenders for a one-on-one shot against the keeper for a 2-0 lead. The first half scoring ended as Ashley York tapped in a rebound off a shot from Lindsay Burns in the 41st minute.

The second half proved to be even more fruitful as the Bears scored four of their goals in a 10-minute span. The first goal came in the 48th minute as Campos' free kick from the top of the box hit the bottom of the crossbar and went in.

Then came the frenzy. In the 54th minute, King set up McKenna Martin with a pass for a one-on-one shot against the keeper for a goal. Two minutes later, York roped a free kick from the top of the box through traffic and the keeper's hands. In the 60th minute, King rebounded her own shot in the box and passed to Martin for a tap-in goal. Five minutes later, York served up a corner kick that was headed in by Katie Milberger.

Baylor Bear Insider Recap
By Hector Castelltort

After scoring just four goals and going winless in its first five games, the Baylor soccer team (3-4-1) has put together a three-game win streak by netting 17 goals.

On a wonderful afternoon for soccer, the Bears clinched the Baylor Tournament title with an 8-0 win over the UTSA Roadrunners (0-6-1) Sunday at Betty Lou Mays Field.

Baylor came out firing early, with Katie Daigle firing a shot over the crossbar barely into the second minute.

Keeping the heat on the UTSA goalkeeper, the Bears got off two more shots before senior forward Bri Campos scored her first goal of the season after the Roadrunners were called for a foul in the box in the 12th minute of the game.

Taking a pass from Sarah King, Lauren Piercy beat UTSA goalkeeper Michelle Cole and extended the lead to 2-0 with a goal in the 26th minute. Not only did King assist on that goal, she also assisted on a second-half goal and netted one herself on one of her two shots on goal.

"It felt pretty good," King said. "Anything I can do to help the team."

Ashley York was also productive, tapping in a rebound off a shot by Lindsay Burns to give Baylor a 3-0 lead at the break.

It took the Bears just over 10 minutes into the second half to match their first-half scoring. Campos got into the act again, this time on a free kick from the top of the box that hit the crossbar and bounced into the net.

McKenna Martin scored her second goal of the season on a header pass from King, then York ripped a free kick in from the top of the box that scorched through goalkeeper Katherine Tesno's hands to give the Bears a comfortable 6-0 lead in the 11th minute of the second half and 56th minute of the game.

Capping off the scoring, King rebounded her own shot and passed to Martin to net a goal in the 60th minute, and then Katie Milberger headed in a goal off a corner kick by York less than five minutes later.

While Baylor scored a season-high eight goals off 26 shots, the defense held the Roadrunners to just two total shots and one on goal.

"Something we do that a lot of teams don't is our forwards also defense," York said. "The defense all across the field is really good for our team."

As head coach Paul Jobson put it, the Bears "defend from the front to the back." That takes the pressure off goalkeepers Sara Martinson and Rebecca Gartner, who combined for just one save while posting the team's second straight shutout.

"So far this season, this is probably the first complete game that we have put together," Jobson said. "I am proud of the way we started, I am proud of the game, I am proud of the consistency throughout the game and how we finished."

With wins over UTSA and Northern Illinois (2-0), Baylor captured the tournament title. UL-Lafayette (5-2-1) followed up a 2-2 tie with UTSA by beating UNI, 2-1, in Sunday's other game.

Campos was named the MVP and was joined on the all-tournament team by Burns, King and Julie James.

Before opening Big 12 play, the Bears will travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., next weekend, facing Air Force (2-4-0) at 7 p.m. CDT Friday and Colorado College (1-5-1) at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
