Sept. 16, 2015 WACO, Texas -- Led by the No. 4 singles ranking of senior Julian Lenz, the Baylor men's tennis team placed three players in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's preseason rankings, which were released recently.
Besides Lenz's listing, Max Tchoutakian was ranked at No. 36 and Felipe Rios was No. 87 in singles. In the doubles rankings, Lenz and Tchoutakian partnered together to be No. 15 in the country. Last season, Lenz enjoyed a 26-9 season and was ranked at No. 4 to end the year. He reached the second round of the NCAA Singles Championship and posted a 15-5 mark for the Bears in the No. 1 spot. Lenz by virtue of being a seeded player in the NCAA Singles Championship earned All-America honors in singles.
Tchoutakian (No. 56) concluded his first season in Waco in the second round of the NCAA Singles Championships with an 18-12 record overall. The first-year Bear was 15-10 in dual-match play and achieved a season-high singles ranking of No. 36 on March 10.
Rios was a steady point for the Bears throughout the year at bottom of the lineup, tallying a 30-8 record overall and a 21-4 mark in dual-match action. He was 18-4 at the No. 6 spot in the lineup. In doubles, Lenz and Tchoutakian will be a first-time pairing in 2015. However, both players experienced success in 2014 separately in doubles.
Lenz ended the season with a 23-2 record in dual-match play and a 26-3 mark overall with partner Diego Galeano. The 26 wins tied for the second-most in program history for a single season with Benedikt Dorsch and Reiner Neurohr's tally from 2002-03.Three of the final five wins for Galeano and Lenz came over top-10 teams as they posted a 14-2 record against ranked foes.
They were the first Baylor pairing to ever make the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship and were first BU tandem to ever end the season at No. 1.
Meanwhile, Tchoutakian was 6-0 with three different partners in doubles play.
Tchoutakian was selected last week to the main draw singles draw of the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships, while Rios is in the qualifying draw starting Oct. 6.
Both Lenz and Tchoutakian will kick off the season Friday at the Oracle/ITA Master's in Maibu, Calif.
