On the wrong end of overtime decisions twice already this season, the Baylor soccer team (6-4-1, 1-0-0) grabbed its first overtime win in over a year, opening Big 12 play with a 1-0 vicgtory over the Oklahoma State Cowgirls (5-5-0, 0-1-0) Friday night at Betty Lou Mays Field.

Just 3 ½ minutes into the overtime period, Sarah King lobbed a pass into the box from the left wing and McKenna Martin headed it toward the right side of the box to freshman Jackie Crowther, who blasted it into the back of the net from about 12 yards out for the golden goal.

"Overtime is always a little nerve-racking. One goal, and you are done either way," said Baylor coach Paul Jobson, whose team has won six games in a row. "We've been on the other side of that (twice this year), but I couldn't be more proud of the girls, just how they were consistent for the entire match."

Demonstrating the game's physical nature, both teams committed 17 fouls and were hit with a yellow card.

Baylor had a dominating 16-5 edge in shots and 4-1 in shots on goal through 90 minutes of regulation, but the game remained scoreless until Crowther notched her third goal of the season and first game-winner.

"It was really awesome," the freshman forward said. "Every moment of the game was just the most exciting moment. Conference is just a new level, a new chapter, and we've been preparing for this all season, all pre-season, every single practice."

King now has nine assists for the season, which is tied for the fourth-best single-season mark in program history and three off the school record. She leads the Big 12 and ranks second in the nation.

In the 31st minute, King shot the ball from inside the box and hit the crossbar on one of her four shots of the night.

Junior forward Ashley York, who had a game-high five shots, said the Bears came up with the extra push they needed to win the game.

"We are warriors, and we are not going to back down from a fight, ever," York said. "(OSU) maybe underestimated us. We just came out and fought hard, and they didn't know what hit them."

Baylor's solid defense held the Cowgirls to just one shot on goal among their five shots as junior goalkeeper Sara Martinson recorded her sixth career win, fifth in a row and third career shutout.

"We got one win, and it's an important one," Jobson said. "You always want to get the first one. You always want to win at home. We will enjoy this one tonight, and tomorrow we will be on to next week."

The Bears, tied with West Virginia and TCU atop the Big 12 standings, will face Iowa State (5-5-0, 0-1-0) at 7 p.m. next Friday, Oct. 2, in Ames, Iowa. In Friday's other Big 12 openers, TCU shut out Iowa State, 5-0, WVU blanked Texas, 2-0, and Texas Tech tied Oklahoma, 0-0.
