Feb. 10, 2016 IRVING, Texas - For the second time in 2016, Baylor men's tennis senior Julian Lenz was named the Big 12 Player of the Week by conference officials Wednesday.
Lenz was perfect at No. 1 singles and doubles for the Bears as they battled two top-20 opponents over the last week in Waco.
The senior, who is unranked after playing through injuries in the fall, upset fifth-ranked Arthur Rinderknech of Texas A&M, 6-4, 6-1, Wednesday and then took down Mississippi's 36th-ranked Stefan Lindmark, 7-5, 6-2, Saturday.
Despite BU coming up short in both matches, Lenz partnered with Will Little in doubles to capture a pair of wins over the Aggies and Rebels' top duos by matching 6-2 scores.
Lenz is now 6-0 in singles dual-match play and has won 11-straight matches, including three wins against ranked foes. He is 5-1 with Little in doubles and has won four-straight contests
Lenz last won the honor on Jan. 21, after capturing the 2016 Sherwood Collegiate Cup singles title. The Giessen, Germany, native, has now been awarded the honor three times in his career, after also being named player of the week on April 21, 2015.
It is Baylor's 39th Big 12 weekly honor since 2000. Lenz is one of 16 different Bears to be recognized in that stretch.
The senior is one of only six players that has been honored three or more times in their career. He joins Benjamin Becker (5), Benedikt Dorsch (5), Zoltan Papp (5), Lars Poerschke (4) and Mate Zsiga (3) in that category. He is the first Bear to be honored twice in one season since Zsiga accomplished the feat in 2012.
Baylor will now head to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va., where the Bears will face sixth-seeded Ohio State in the first round Friday at 8 a.m. CT.
