BAYLOR POSTGAME QUOTES

Baylor Head Coach Scott Drew

On the final seconds of the game...
"Honestly, I didn't know what they were going to call. I didn't know if they were going to let us shoot free throws, let them shoot free throws, if it was an inadvertent whistle, then who would get it. Us coaches know the rulebook, but not those rules like that, because you don't have too many inadvertent whistles. At the end we were just blessed we got the ball so we didn't have a shot go up to tie our lead. It was an alternating ball, and the possession error was for us."

On the run Motley has had recently...
"His teammates are doing a good job of getting him the ball to be in positions where he can be successful. Other than that, he's doing a good job of being efficient and getting to the free throw line for scoring. He's doing a good job at rebounding, he had five offensive rebounds."

On how he feels about the past few games...
"With all the hype and excitement, with being ranked number one, and just the emotion that was involved. Again, we had big goals and other goals, but just the excitement of everybody else. Just how many times you were getting asked and all those things about it. When you have a letdown after that it's kind of like when you play a real big game, a nationally televised game, a lot of times the next game you're flat. So for us to come back and get four wins after the emotional high of being ranked number one says a lot to the leadership of Ish and the upperclassmen."

On initial expectations for the season to now...
"You're always putting game plans together. You think if you execute, you think if you play well, you think you can win, but again with the margin of error in the Big 12, you know that you can play well and lose a lot of games too. With our strength of schedule, we got the number one RPI, and with the teams we played in the non-conference, same thing with the Big 12, there's a handful of games we could've lost as well. So tonight if we don't make free throws like that then we wouldn't win."

On giving the team a lift in the second half...
"I just came off the bench and I wanted to spark energy with them being tired. I wanted to be a spark to help the team any way possible and that was by defending and hitting the open shots."

On Tech's bigs in foul trouble...
"Coach actually did a good job of seeing the personnel and seeing who was guarding me. We ran a specific play to try and get one of the bigs on the wings so I could try to attack and maybe get a foul on one of them since they were in foul trouble."

On getting to the free throw line...
"The coaches told me not to settle for the jump shots. We did some talking before the game and I decided to attack the rim as hard as I could every time. They got a lot of fouls today and I made the free throws so it just kept working out for me."

On avoiding being a statistic tonight...
"We knew it was going to be a hard fought game. Texas Tech is a good team, really physical, they're good on offense and usually end up getting good shots when they're open. We just tried to make sure we played defense, making them shoot over contested hands and rebound."

TEXAS TECH POSTGAME QUOTES

Texas Tech Head Coach Chris Beard

On Tech's performance...
"I'm proud of our guys, I enjoyed sitting on that bench tonight watching those guys compete against a really good team. Congratulations to Baylor, I thought they came out ready to play. I like Scott Drew, I don't know him that well, we're not buddies or anything. I was in this league when he got the job a long time ago, I just watched him from afar. I've got a lot of respect for what Baylor does. They've got good players, they're put in situations to play, he's a positive guy, his teams don't beat themselves. We took a step forward tonight but life in the Big 12, sometimes you can play well but you don't get the results you're looking for. Congratulations to Baylor."

On the last seconds of the game...
"I thought we played well, there was 38 seconds so it's an eight second differential. I'm not good at spelling, I don't know what inadvertent whistle means. I'm good at math and 38 minus 30 is eight so we have eight seconds if we get the stop. Baylor didn't have a bad free throw shooter on the floor. I thought we played to the ball, I thought we played correctly. Coming down like that I would like to shoot the three and either win the game or go on the bus and go to George's and get a chicken fried steak."

On the officiating...
"Let me be clear, I've coached for 20-something years and I don't really get in to the officiating. My first year coaching at a college not too far from here, the assistant coach was Pete Peterson and the very first game we played I was like Johnny coach jumping up and down and Pete's like, 'Hey man, you're never going to make it in coaching unless you do your job. Let the bus driver drive the bus, let the trainer tape the ankles, let the refs call the game.' And I've really done that my whole career. Tonight's just frustrating because it's a heated game, we wanted to play well. We talked to our guys about blocking well and I thought we did a better job on the boards, but for some reason, free throw differentials still just night and day. But I had no problem with the officiating. Baylor beat us tonight. We didn't get beat by bad officiating. Baylor beat us. They've got a good coach and we have a lot of respect for their program."

Junior F Justin Gray

On focusing more tonight...
"We had a lot of tough practices the past couple of days after Oklahoma State and just kind of refocusing on what this team's built on and what we're really about. Coach Beard tried to bring out the best of me and everybody really. We went out there and we competed. We played very physical and we just didn't get it done, but I'm proud of the way my team fought and how we came back early on. I'm proud of how we came back, we almost had them, but it was a great game."

On running out of time...
"Coach Beard always says we're never going to lose, we just run out of time, so I feel like we executed, we boxed out, we rebounded and we just didn't have enough time. We had a chance at the end, but the way the ball bounced and the refs and all that, it just didn't go our way at the end."
