Baylor Bear Foundation After going through an extended scoring drought of more than 225 minutes, when the lid finally came off the net, Baylor soccer exploded for two first-half goals and shut out Texas Tech, 3-0, Friday night at Betty Lou Mays Field.
The Bears (8-3-2, 2-2-1), surpassing their scoring total from the previous four conference games combined, got header goals from Camryn Wendlandt and Previous Akanyirige in the first half and then finished it off when Julie James scored off a rebound from Aline De Lima's penalty kick.
"That was an absolute great game, all over the field, from everybody," coach Paul Jobson said. "We weren't stressed about not scoring, but at some point you hope the lid comes off the back of the goal and you're able to put some in the back of the net. And to do it against a great team - Texas Tech is no joke. They've been scoring a lot of goals, and we were able to shut them out. That's a big defensive effort as well."
Neither team was able to get anything going on the offensive end through the first 15 minutes of the game, the first shot not coming until Wendlandt scored on a header into the top right corner of the net off a long, diagonal pass from Sarah King at the 16:23 mark.
"It just felt really nice to finally put some goals away," said Wendlandt, who netter her second goal of the season. "(King) has amazing talent, and I feel so lucky to play with a player like her. She just put the ball in the right place. It was nothing that I did."
Jobson called a "great Sarah King play" for the junior defender, who picked up her second assist of the season and 17th of her career, tied for the fourth-most in program history.
"That's what we want from her as a left back is to be able to hit that early diagonal ball in and get some chances," Jobson said. "Cam did a great job. We've been working on flicks with her, quite honestly, for the last couple weeks and it paid off tonight for her."
On a new play that they had just put in this week and gone over maybe three times in practice, the Bears pulled off a little trickery to put the second score on the board.
Caitlin Schwartz passed short to De Lima off a corner kick from the far side, got the return kick and put a cross into the box that Akanyirige headed in just inside the near post for a 2-0 lead.
"They looked like they had been doing that kick for six years, and we just introduced it this week," Jobson said. "Their level of focus tonight was just through the roof, and that was a great example of their focus, just being able to execute that."
Freshman goalkeeper Jennifer Wandt didn't see a lot of traffic in the first half, but did make a save on a shot by Jordie Harr. The Red Raiders' best chance came at the 21:29 mark, when Baylor was called for a foul just outside of the penalty box, but Brooke Denisek's free kick hit the crossbar and was cleared by the defense.
Wendlandt said the Bears have "100 percent confidence" in the freshman goalkeeper. "Jen's stepping up right now as a freshman, and she's doing great things. She's so rock-solid in everything she does."
Wandt was much busier in the second half, recording three of her four saves. She lunged to punch a shot by Kirsten Davis over the goal and then made a diving save on an Ally Griffin shot from point-blank range.
"She didn't have to do a ton," Jobson said of Wandt, who recorded her sixth solo shutout of the season, "but great goalkeepers step up when they need to. She did that tonight."
Tackled in the penalty box on a breakaway attempt, De Lima took the penalty kick from 12 yards, but hit the crossbar. An alert James took the rebound and found the net with a high-arcing, left-footed shot from the far side to give the Bears the 3-0 lead six minutes into the second half.
"I always tell Aline that I have her back on the field," said James, who scored her first goal of the season and eighth of her career, "so I wanted to show that to her tonight. And it was a good way to prove it to her."
Snapping a string of four consecutive overtime games, all in conference play, Baylor improved to 15-5-3 in the all-time series with Tech (8-5-1, 1-3-1). The Bears finished with an 11-7 edge in shots and scored on three of their five shots on goal.
After a rare Sunday off, Baylor goes back on the road to face Kansas State (6-6-1, 1-3-0) at 7 p.m. next Friday in Manhattan, Kan., and then Kansas (6-6-2, 1-2-1) at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15, in Lawrence.
THE RUNDOWN WACO, Texas - Baylor soccer (8-3-2, 2-2-1) had an offensive breakthrough, defeating Texas Tech (8-5-1, 1-3-1) in a 3-0 shutout on Friday evening at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field.
BU closed out its first Big 12 match of the season that ended in regulation, helped by two first half goals and a third in the second half to ice the victory.
The Bears got off to a quick start, netting an early goal in the 17th minute when Sarah King served a kick deep into the box, finding Camryn Wendlandt, who headed home the goal into the top right corner of the net.
Keeping up the steady pressure on the attack, the Bears took advantage of corner kick in the 31st minute, with Caitlin Schwartz setting up to kick for the Bears. The senior defender passed short to Aline De Lima, who kicked back to Schwartz just in front of the corner flag.
Schwartz crossed in a hard serve to the near side of the net, with Precious Akanyirige stepping in to drive home the header goal to put the Bears up, 2-0.
After the break, the Red Raiders came out swinging in the second half, but the Bears pushed back, earning a penalty kick on a Texas Tech yellow card in the box in the 52nd minute.
De Lima took the shot for the Bears, with her kick rebounding off the cross post out to the left side of the box.
Julie James was in perfect position to jump in and head home the third goal for the Bears, capping off the 3-0 scoring effort.

TOP QUOTES
"I was hoping that the comforts of home would bring out a little bit of luck, some of that that you get it at home. It was nice to have that. That's an absolute great game, all over the field, from everybody. Just an overall great performance from everybody. I couldn't be more proud of just everybody all over the field, what they were able to put into tonight. And then, able to finish some chances. Again, we weren't stressed about not scoring, but at some point you hope that that lid comes off the back of the goal and you're able to put some in the back of the net. And against a great team -- Texas Tech's no joke. They've been scoring a lot of goals this year, too, and we were able to shut them out. That's a big defensive effort as well." - Baylor head coach Paul Jobson
