Attendance: 5,330 BAYLOR POSTGAME QUOTES
Baylor Head Coach Scott Drew
Opening statement...
"I thought for the first 12-13 minutes we were really good and then after that we weren't as efficient. The two bright spots were rebounding whenever you can out-rebound someone 49 to 27 and 18 to 5 on offensive boards, 15 to 4 second-chance points. It was great to see Jo really high point balls and rebound better than he did against Corpus Christi, so that was a positive. And that's back-to-back games our turnovers have been cut way down. So excited about that. Defensively, we weren't very good for the last 30 minutes of the game, but we got the win and we got everybody healthy. Hopefully that stays that way until Monday night."
On getting his 300th win...
"That's just a player award because you can't achieve that without players, fans and coaches. Coaches are the last ones to get excited about that. So that's a good accomplishment for everybody."
On guys stepping up offensively...
"I thought when you shoot 43 percent that's not very good and 25 percent from three that's not very good. But taking care of the ball and getting to the free-throw line 24 times, that was the positive. And again at the end of the day, we can get better from this and we got the win. Now, it's on to bigger, better things, which is let's see really how good we are and what we need to work on."
On Alcorn State's performance...
"I thought they were very good. I thought they had several opportunities where they could have just laid down or just started taking quick shots, trying to get stats and stop playing. But they stayed fundamentally sound and ran their offense, defensively were locked in and there's a reason they've been successful in the SWAC."
Junior King McClure
On getting Coach Drew's 300th win...
"That's a huge deal. Coach Drew deserves it. I feel like he's the most underrated coach in college basketball and he has 300 wins now, that's big time. I'm proud of him and happy for him. I'm just looking forward to getting him more wins this year."
On how the team played tonight...
"I feel like we executed and stuck to the game plan. There were spurts where we could have played a little bit harder and have played a little better defense. They got too many easy shots, but we pulled through, we got a victory, and it's on to the next game."
Freshman Tristan Clark
On feeling more comfortable...
"Yeah, I feel way more comfortable. The first two games were a little shaky, but today I felt really confident. I just went out and played my game."
On his role this year...
"My role is just to go out there and play hard, learn how to play hard. You know, I'm still getting used to the college game and just playing hard every possession cause I'm still 18, I'm still a high-schooler in my eyes. I play hard every possession and just keep going."
ALCORN STATE POSTGAME QUOTES
Alcorn State Head Coach Montez Robinson
Opening statement...
"I thought the guys competed the whole game. The effort was great. One of the things we were preaching early on in the game was we had to rebound with guys. We could not just stand there and just jump with them because of the length and the size. We did not do a good job of boxing out the whole game. I thought we played in spurts of about 15 minutes of that where we actually tried to really box out guys, and we came up with some stops by doing that. But for the most part, I thought our effort was good, and that's a good ball team over there, No. 25 in the country. For us to come in and compete the way we competed is a plus. We're walking out with our heads held high and looking forward to the next opportunity to get on the court."
On Reginal Johnson's performance...
"Not bad, not bad. You know, in our league he's not going up against two seven-footers at the same time, but he was able to pick his spots in there. I don't know what he ended up with, about 12 to 14 points. That's right along his average. Last year he finished with us about 16 and 8, so he just knows how to score the ball and picks his spots. I wanted him to rebound a little bit better, but it was a good showing. There's a lot of good film. We can go back and teach him a few things so he can continue to get better so we can get ready for conference."
