Opening Statement…
"Well, it's always better to learn from a win than a loss. And again, starting the year with that. Fewest returning lettermen, power five, and 4th overall after 353 schools we knew it was going to be tough. Unfortunately, we made the schedule, we scheduled teams that we thought would win their league and the three teams we played in the SWAC we thought were the three best. And when you're facing seniors and good players, Prairie View is an outstanding team. They went to Sam (Houston State) and scrimmaged and won by 20. They went to Santa Clara and won by 20 out there. It's hard to win on the road anywhere by 20, let alone on the West Coast. This is a good team. And with us, I think we play in spurts. We can be really, really good and we can be really, really bad. And that's what you get with inexperience. The thing is, you guys get to go home and sleep, and I have to watch the film. The good parts are great and the bad parts are really bad. But, we are going to get better each and every day. We just want to get better with wins. That is the most important thing. If we could bottle up how Tristan played in that 5-6 minute stretch in the second half, I told him I would buy a ticket to watch him play as well as he played in that stretch."
On staying ahead in the second half when it got close…
"I think King did a great job of keeping everybody focused. Tristan really was dominant in that stretch. And then defensively, we went back to actually guarding five guys on the court. For a second there, we tried the strategy 'let's guard everybody but their best player, the guy who scored 30 points, and see if he could score against nobody, and he could. So, I've never seen that before. So we will get better finding our men, matching up, making sure we identify scouting reports. Guys that drive left, that means they are driving left. Guys that are catch and shoot means they're going to catch and shoot. We can't give them catch and shoot shots. When we follow what the game plan is, we look really good. And then all of the sudden we don't and we look really bad. Again, that is the great part about these early games, and you gain experience. We are getting a lot of new guys in their first experience in situations that where, let's face it, there's a lot of pressure. You should win your home games early in the year. And we're playing good teams that are good."
On Jared Butler…
"Well he's been a lot better the last two games, but I'll tell you what Jared is. He is really good defensively and that has been a big plus for us. He does a good job and help-side does a good job in identifying who needs to be guarded, and that has really been helpful for us."
BAYLOR SOPHOMORE TRISTAN CLARK
On ability to get inside and overall role in tonight's game…
"In the first half, we came out with good energy but not good enough. Second half we came out slow and they made a good little comeback. It was getting closer and closer and I was on the bench, so I felt like I had to spark up the team by talking a lot and encouraging them. Getting the ball, causing fouls, creating for them if they collapse. My mindset was just to win, and I just wanted to get that done and I did whatever it took."
On blocks…
"When I block a shot, the crowd goes wild and it definitely ignites my team. I feel like when I get going on defense and block shots, it creates easy buckets in transition."
On the spark when PVAMU came within two…
"They gave me the ball and I got an and-one and I went to the free throw line, and we just started corralling from there. From there we just got stops and made shots, and we just wanted to win."
BAYLOR FRESHMAN JARED BUTLER
On having his best game so far and feeling more comfortable…
"The first game, a lot of jitters and a lot of wondering what's it going to be like. I think me as a person, once I feel comfortable and once I feel the environment, I will play better. I'll play more comfortable, and I think that's what you saw tonight."
On teammates helping him…
"A lot, they always tell me, 'man JB just go out there and play. Stop thinking and just go out there and play.' Tristan, he's always encouraging me, and I think that helps out a lot. I think that once I get my mindset that I'm just going to play, that helps me out a lot."
On trying to win…
"I wanted to win like Tristan said, and I'm going to do whatever I think is best for our team to win. If I see a lane or if I see an opening, I just let my instincts take over and I try to knock the shot down. I wasn't trying to take over. I wasn't trying to do it all by myself. I was just trying to win."
