BAYLOR POSTGAME QUOTES
Baylor Head Coach Scott Drew
Opening Statement…
"Well there's some games that don't turn out like you think and there's other games coming in where you really try to lay it out to the guys. I thought Coach Tang and the scout really did a good job because we said this game is going to be a one-possession game, it's going to be in the 50's, 60's, maybe even the 40's, they just beat UMBC. So we knew it was going to be a grind-it game. What I didn't know is that I thought Mario [Kegler] would cramp second half, not first half. I thought there'd be one airball, not three airballs. It's going to take a long time for us the rest of the month to get chemistry, rotations, be able to put in some plays with personnel. The difference with a young team and being able to have some experience at the end of the game, we win the last five minutes by plus-12. With first-year guys, you don't win the last five minutes, and you don't win it by 12 normally. It was great to get stops. The biggest thing defensively we were good with 34 percent, eight turnovers is great, the rebounding is the area that obviously surprised us. For them to beat us 19-9, obviously we've got to fix that."
On Mario Kegler's debut…
"He was so excited and I think you saw that. You can do cardio all you want, but when you step out on the court with the lights it's just different. We thought he would have one airball, we didn't think he would cramp in the first half. It's just cause he's been out a year and six games. He was pretty excited to play. 'Rio is such a likeable guy and everybody was so excited to see him out there, wanting him to do well. I think you saw flashes of what he can do. More importantly, defensively, Mark [Vital] and him really can lock down.
On missing shots early in the game…
"First of all, defensively [South Dakota] is really good. That's part of why they hold people, not just because they milk it on the offense and make you guard, but it's really good backline defense. I was surprised we struggled with the double team in the post like we did. People that double Tristan [Clark], we've normally made them pay. We thought they would double from the beginning, we thought we'd get open threes, we like that and it didn't turn out that way. Credit their double team affecting us more than we thought. Now it gives us something to work on and get better for."
On how the offense changes with Mason and Kegler in the lineup…
"Let's look at it this way, you've got a dynamic quarterback who's a dual-threat, so he comes in and that changes your offense. Maybe you've got a big back and now all of a sudden you add a tailback who's really fast, well that changes your offense. It's not like we've been working on what we're going to run, we're working on what we're trying to win these past six games with. We haven't worked on anything with those two in because we started the season already. Now after this break, we'll have a chance to put in some stuff that works with Makai and Mario and takes advantage of those mismatches more."
Baylor Senior Makai Mason
On the 12-0 run to end the game…
"I think just defensively we were pretty active, able to get rebounds and that helped us get stops. We were able to get a couple key buckets down the stretch but it was really the defense that sparked it."
On the upcoming schedule…
"It's going to be fun. Those are the challenges you look forward to playing college basketball. Those are the games that, every game matters but those are the environments that you love to play in. It's going to be fun."
Baylor Redshirt Sophomore Mario Kegler
On his first game in a Baylor uniform…
"It was an ugly dub but we got it. I'm just happy to be back out there, fighting with my team."
On finding a groove as the game went on…
"I came out and tried to rush it a little bit, but I slowed it down in the second half, just let it come to me and it worked out."
SOUTH DAKOTA POSTGAME QUOTES
South Dakota Head Coach Todd Lee
Opening Statement…
"I was proud of the way our guys battled the whole night. It felt like we gave one away the second half, up six. You know you come into a place like this— well coached team, very athletic, you don't get many opportunities to win games like this. I was disappointed in the end result, but I was really proud of the way our guys came in here and played. We came in here and led pretty much the whole game, only turned it over eight times, won the possession game, we had more offensive rebounds than they did. If you're going to win a game on the road, you've got to knock down shots and we go 1 for 16 in the second half and to be honest, a lot of them were standstill, wide open jump shots and we just didn't make them. When you go on the road, you're going to have to make jump shots and we didn't make jump shots, especially in the second half tonight."
On playing to their identity…
"We don't have a real deep bench, we got some injuries, we got two starters out. We wanted to, if we didn't have anything to transition, set up our offense. I thought we were really good defensively, we were set in the half court. When the game got spread a little bit, their athleticism and strength took over and that's where they got some offensive rebounds, put backs, and got some stuff in transition. If you're talking about our identity, we do have to play a bit of half court basketball right now because of our lack of depth. I thought our guys did that and when we were set defensively in the half court, I thought we defended really well."
On Trey's performance…
"He always leaves it on the floor, he's got a huge heart. He played great. We took advantage of some match ups in the second half with him in the post and maybe could have gone to that a little bit earlier in the first half, but he played great. He's our leader defensively, our guy we count on every night. As you can see, he's strong hearted, but he's not the biggest guy in the world and he's battling a lot of guys, big guys. I'm always proud of his effort."
South Dakota Senior F Trey Burch-Manning
On the energy before the last five minutes…
"They're a good team, but I felt like for the majority of the game, we controlled it. We felt good but even after the five minutes we had a lot of energy and thought it was still our game too. Basketball is a game of making shots, sometimes you can't control it. We missed a lot of shots we normally make."
On the match up tonight…
"It was pretty fun. I'm a competitor so I like battling every night. Those guys are strong, athletic. Coach was telling us to rebound so I took it as a challenge and wanted to rebound to the best of my abilities and try to help my team get a win."
