BAYLOR POSTGAME QUOTES
Baylor Head Coach Scott Drew
Opening Statement…
"Well, much different feeling after today's game than the last game. The game of basketball and the parity nowadays and the different emotions you feel in a week with two great wins and a tough loss. Definitely from a coaching standpoint, you always want to go in the holidays on a high note. I thought the guys really did a great job locking in, and the first thing you worry about on holidays is 'are guys checked out mentally?' meaning are they more worried about how they're getting home and what they're doing over the break than finishing it out. Our guys were locked in. It was a great team effort. Defensively, we did what we're really good at. That's another quality win. Proud of the guys."
On the 10-2 run to close the game…
"We've had some good ones, like South Dakota we closed well on, this game we closed well on. I think as we continue to play more and continue to get more experience, guys continue to know their roles and start to step up. The last couple huddles, the upperclassmen were making sure everyone was locked in and doing what we needed to do."
On getting the ball inside tonight…
"Tristan (Clark) is so unselfish. It's hard to get it inside because every team knows that if it gets in there, it's tough for them too. We'll continue to get better at that. Oregon's defense makes it tougher to get the ball inside with the changing defenses and the zone."
On Jared Butler's passing ability…
"I think he knows we need (good passing), he's really good at that and our team needs more of that. I think he's trying to do that because he likes to win. He really made some nice passes and did some good things tonight. Defensively, I know he always gives you intensity and he'll always get in his stance. He's an energy giver."
Baylor Sophomore Tristan Clark
On if the game plan was to get the ball down low…
"Oregon, they play a zone defense just like us so we know the weakness is to get it in the high post, or anywhere inside. If I can score, then great, but if they collapse on me then it's open shots for my teammates. That was the game plan."
On how encouraging the 10-2 run to close the game was…
"It was very encouraging. Last game, unfortunately we lost. In the last five minutes they just beat us. This game, we made sure to play the whole game and play tough the whole game. We made sure the first five minutes were important and the last five minutes were important. We just did our job and got the victory."
On playing without Mark Vital in the last seven minutes…
"Mark is the heart and soul of this team. He brings a lot of toughness, he brings energy. That's his game. So, when he was out, everybody had to step their game up to another notch and I feel like that's what we did in the last five minutes with him out."
Baylor Senior Makai Mason
On finding open shots in the paint tonight…
"I think when we penetrated we were able to get some post touches easier, like Tristan (Clark) said. Once we got him the ball, if he's one-on-one he's going to score. If not, the defense is going to key in on him, that's wide-open shots for us."
On playing low-scoring, defensive games…
"Yeah, I think that's going to be key for us. We know when we get to Big 12 games it's going to be a grind every game. So, it comes down to execution and being able to lock up on defense."
OREGON POSTGAME QUOTES
Oregon Head Coach Dana Altman
Opening Statement…
"Obviously, the rebounding total. Second-chance points 12 to 2, and they beat us by 13 on the boards. That's probably the first place it starts. And then we had bad turnovers. We weren't making plays for our teammates. We took a lot of bad shots in the first half. We'd drive and just throw something up. We weren't thinking to get in there against their zone and make a play."
On the first 12 minutes…
"We were stagnant. The ball wasn't moving. We didn't translate very well what we worked on in practice to the game. Just not very aggressive. When we did get aggressive, we just made the wrong decisions."
On Payton Pritchard's performance…
"He hit a few threes that got us back in the game. I thought our ball movement was a little better in the second half. Guys moved it a little bit better and made some better plays."
On Baylor's Makai Mason…
"He did some nice things, hit a couple big threes that they needed in a timely manner. Then, he got to the rim and shot a layup. They're experienced. Their size bothered us."
