BAYLOR POSTGAME QUOTES
Baylor Head Coach Scott Drew
Opening Statement…
"Pleased with the outcome. You look at all the upsets across the country, especially this first game back, coaches are always worried about this game, but I thought we did a really nice job of settling down and we were really good defensively early on which allowed us to wait for our offense to catch up. Really pleased how we finished offensively with 22 assists. Jared (Butler) with six, Devonte (Bandoo) with four, and Makai (Mason) with five was tremendous."
On scoring over 60 points…
"The concern always is, if you score more do you give up more? What we really wanted to do was keep the defense where it's been because it's been phenomenal. I think our offense is slowly but surely starting to catch up and we'll keep grinding away with that. 14 turnovers, if we can keep that number down with as good as we are defensively, that really helps."
On scoring in transition…
"I think we got better. One area when we got back from break, we wanted to work on our transition offense and I think we got a little bit better with that. Hopefully in this next week, we can get better in some other areas as well and keep improving with that as we get into Big 12 play."
On gaining momentum from tonight's win…
"Definitely. Everybody played, everybody contributed. For the most part, everybody did something well and had something to build off of. So hopefully we can take that. In college basketball, there's not many 40-point wins, so when you get one you need to enjoy it."
Baylor Sophomore Tristan Clark
On Makai Mason's dunk…
"I didn't know, I didn't think he could jump. We were up enough and he was wide open so, might as well. It was impressive. Especially with his medical history."
On the offensive breakout tonight…
"I just believe shots were just falling tonight. That's a big improvement for us because our shooting has been our downfall this year. But shots were going in today, we played really well, we had 22 assists as a team, moved the ball really well and got stops on the defensive side. Our team's confidence and swag started to pick up."
On playing tough defense and blocking shots…
"Just in practice, our coaches are really strict on defense. We can't win any games without playing defense. That's our main focus on this team. Our zone is very effective as well. You can't play one-on-one. You've got to make a lot of decisions in our zone. That kind of messes up our opponent."
Baylor Freshman Jared Butler
On Makai Mason's dunk…
"It was a phenomenal play at first. I saw him trailing out of the corner of my eye and I knew the guy was going to jump for my layup and I just threw it off the backboard. Luckily, he helped me assist Makai with the dunk and glassed it back to him. That was pretty much it."
On playing with a smile on his face…
"I just enjoy playing with these guys. I love playing basketball and I love competing. Coach Drew, he's always making me laugh too because he's telling me to get up and play D. I just love playing and love playing with these guys, so you see that on the court."
On carrying momentum from tonight's win…
"It's definitely going to help us, for sure. I think seeing some shots fall in, that's going to help us. We had a lot of assists. That's going to carry over into the Big 12. I think us playing in transition, we're going to want to play that way more often. We're going to want to get out and run more often. That game is going to bounce pad us into Big 12."
