The Fred Haskins Award is given annually to the best college golfer, as voted by players, coaches, sports information directors and media. Voting for the oldest college golf award, which dates back to 1971, opens at the end of NCAA Regionals and runs through the end of the NCAA Championship.
May checks in at No. 11 on the 20-player list. Oklahoma State's Viktor Hovland (No. 2), Texas Tech's Fred Nilehn (No. 4), OSU's Matt Wolff (No. 6), Oklahoma's Brad Dalke (No. 7) and Texas' Doug Ghim (No. 14) combine with May to give the Big 12 Conference six players on the watch list.
May is ranked No. 13 nationally in the latest GolfStat Division I player rankings released on March 20. He leads the team with a 69.90 stroke average across 21 rounds, and he's played 17 of 21 rounds at par or better during his 2017-18 junior season.
May opened the season with an 11-stroke victory in the 27-player Gopher Individual, carding a school-record tying 63 in the final round on his way to a 15-under 201. He tied for 20th place in the 78-player Fighting Illini Invitational, then followed that up with a tie for sixth place in the 73-player Royal Oaks Intercollegiate.
Royal Oaks began a streak of five consecutive top-10 finishes. May tied for seventh place in the 92-player Arizona Intercollegiate, tied for fourth place in the 99-player All-American Intercollegiate, tied for 10th place in the 80-player Querencia Cabo Collegiate and tied for seventh place in the 90-player Valspar Collegiate.
May has shot 72 or better in 19 of his 21 rounds this season, including eight rounds in the 60s. His 201 in the Gopher Individual tied his personal-best 54-hole score and tied the third-best 54-hole total in program history. He also shot 205 in the All-American Intercollegiate, matching the 18th-best total in program history.
May has a 71.99 stroke average over 77 rounds during his three-year Baylor career, which ranks eighth in program history and is less than one-tenth of a stroke back of the top five. His current 2017-18 stroke average of 69.90 is on pace to break the school single-season record by more than half a stroke, set at 70.47 by Kyle Jones in 2014-15.
May is tied for 10th in program history with 11 career top-10 finishes. He had six top-10 finishes in his first 20 collegiate events before starting his active streak of five straight top-10s. He also has four career top-five finishes, three of which came during his 2016-17 sophomore season.
The No. 7-ranked Bears return to action at the Aggie Invitational, which runs April 7-8 at Traditions Golf Club in Bryan, Texas. Follow @BaylorMGolf on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook for updates throughout the season.
