Bears look to build with additions to staff in Maxwell’s second season
WACO, Texas - Baylor equestrian released its 2018-19 schedule on Thursday afternoon, announced by second-year head coach Casie Maxwell.
Baylor will host seven meets at home and compete in just four road meets, leading into a postseason that will see the NCEA National Championships return to Waco at the Extraco Events Center for the 13th-straight season.
"We are very excited about our 2018-19 schedule and look forward to getting started," Maxwell said. "We've got a great balance in our schedule and get to see the majority of NCEA teams at some point in the season. We have a young team and a whole new staff, so this year will be full of tests for us as we continue to get to know one another and grow into a strong unit. I think our schedule will provide our team a good balance of challenge and confidence as we grow as a team."
The first look at the Bears will come on Sept. 14, with BU trekking to Dallas for a 10 a.m. scrimmage at SMU, the final tune-up before the new season officially kicks off.
Baylor will return to Waco and host the Willis Invitational, featuring matchups with Delaware State, UT Martin, and Fresno State, on Sept. 28-29 at the Willis Family Equestrian Center.
BU will open conference on the road in Stillwater, facing Oklahoma State on Oct. 13 before returning to Waco to close out the fall conference calendar with an Oct. 27 matchup with TCU.
The final fall competitions will be hosted by Fresno State where the Bears will face both the hosting Bulldogs and South Carolina Nov. 9 and 10 in Fresno, Calif.
BU will open the spring with back-to-back home meets against Oklahoma State on Feb. 9 and Georgia on Feb. 23.
The final road competition of the regular season will be a short trip to Springtown to close conference play at TCU on March 2, with BU returning to Waco to face Texas A&M on March 9 in the regular season finale.
Oklahoma State will host the 2018-19 Phillips 66 Big 12 Equestrian Championship in Stillwater, running March 29-30.
Baylor, in partnership with the City of Waco and McLennan County, will host the NCEA National Championships at the Extraco Events Center for the 13th-straight season, the second for the organization since moving to a new tournament format in 2017-18. The championship will run April 17-20, with the collegiate equestrian world converging on Waco for the weeklong event.
Baylor is coming off a 5-9 season in the first year under Maxwell, looking to build on the additions of assistant coaches Marlena Beckham (Hunter Seat) and Laura Brainard (Western). Baylor will welcome in a full recruiting class of newcomers, as well as a strong core of returning riders for the 2018-19 season.
All Baylor home events are free and open to the public. Family-friendly attractions include inflatables and pony rides for children, as well as on-site concessions and merchandise.
