Baylor drop four-set match to host and 19th-ranked Toreros
THE RUNDOWN
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – 12th-ranked Baylor volleyball (4-2) couldn't overcome a two-set deficit and dropped a 3-1 loss to host and 19th-ranked San Diego at the USD Invitational Saturday night at Jenny Craig Pavilion, 25-22, 25-18, 18-25, 25-23.
Sophomore Yossiana Pressley led all players for the second-straight match after she matched a career-high 24 kills on an impressive .348 attack efficiency. Aniah Philo (13) and Shelly Fanning (10) also posted double-digit kills.
Defensively, Fanning led the match with seven blocks while Pressley chipped in six.
The first set had the Bears leading 7-2 after a block from Fanning and Hannah Lockin. The Toreros (1-2) worked their way back into the match, but BU would benefit from two attack errors at 21-19 and force a timeout. USD closed out the set on a 6-1 run for the early advantage, 25-22.
BU couldn't slow down the USD attack in set two, allowing the Toreros to hit .500. Despite seven kills from Pressley, the Bears went into the locker room with the 2-0 deficit after dropping the frame, 25-18.
Baylor came out firing in the third set and used a key 6-0 run to pull ahead at 20-14. Capped off with three kills from Pressley, BU took the frame, 25-18.
The fourth set saw 13 tie scores and nine lead changes, but an ace from Taylor Marburger put the Bears up 22-20 and forced the USD timeout. The Toreros tied up the match at 22-all and took three of the next four points to end the match, 25-23.

On facing another top-20 opponent…
"I thought that offensively we were in rhythm a little bit more. We're just going to get better with time. Having (Hannah) Lockin back in the lineup reminds me of when Aniah (Philo) missed all of double days and was thrown in the match. I'm really looking forward to getting back in the gym and getting to train with her. Until UCLA and this match, this is the first time we've been able to run a 5-1 offense. Honestly, I thought we got better in some areas from yesterday. Our blocking showed up at times. The serving let us down in this match when we were trying to finish it off. The list of areas to improve on is strong, but the strength of our players is strong as well. We'll get back after it."
