Baylor records 12th-straight win for best start in program history

Baylor Bear Insider
Rather than sweating the pressure of the program's first No. 1 ranking, Baylor volleyball is embracing it.
Two days after climbing to the top of the AVCA poll, the Bears (12-0, 2-0) looked as cool as the other side of the pillow in sweeping Oklahoma, 25-16, 25-19, 25-12, Wednesday night before a crowd of 1,722 at the Ferrell Center.
"Because of who these ladies are, I wasn't concerned (about the ranking)," said Baylor coach Ryan McGuyre, whose team set school records for best start, most wins in a row and most consecutive sets won (19). "They know it's about points. We've just got to be better each point, and we'll take some good things from this match. There's a lot of good teams out there, we know it, and we'll just keep training one day at a time."
Yossiana Pressley and Gia Milana combined for 26 of Baylor's 42 kills and hit .372 with seven errors on 51 total swings, while freshman middle blocker Kara McGhee had six kills and assisted on two of the team's 6.5 blocks.
McGuyre said the 6-foot-4 McGhee is "light years" ahead of where she was at the start of the season.
"Kara had so many great block touches," McGuyre said. "They're not going down as touch blocks, but I think anytime you saw a long rally happen that we ended up winning was because she was busting her butt to the right to slow the ball down and then we could convert. . . . I was upset that we didn't terminate on some of those, but she stayed engaged in that one play where there were two or three touches that were great, great blocks."
As impressive and sometimes intimidating as the Pressley and Milana kills were, McGuyre was most impressed with the back-row defense. Senior libero Tara Wulf had a match-high 11 digs, with Pressley recording her third double-double of the season with 14 kills and 10 digs.
"Our offense wasn't doing as well as we should have," Pressley said of the team's 14 attack errors. "Once we started digging and Braya (Hunt) started digging balls to the target, that helped a lot. That kind of brought us up, and we were like, 'OK, we need to make these into kills.'''
Even though the Bears hit an efficient .301 and have won 36 of 38 sets this season, McGuyre said there are still "chinks in our armor."
"We want to be battle-tested as much as possible, just so we can address each area and hope that other teams find the chinks in the armor," McGuyre said. "We have lots of them that I know about, but I hope they expose them as we work on them. . . We really, truly hope we get every team's best play."
Oklahoma (10-4, 2-1) simply had no answer for Baylor on offense or defense. The Bears had 42 digs, 6.5 blocks and 42 kills and held the Sooners to a .011 attack percentage.
Trailing 12-11 midway through the first set, Baylor scored eight of the next nine points to take control and then closed it out, 25-16, on a service ace by Hannah Lockin.
"We have been very consistent and we've done a better job at adjusting during the match and not taking our opponents for granted and respecting everybody we play. Any team can beat us," said Pressley, who hit .444 in the first set with five kills and only one error.
In the second set, the Sooners went toe-to-toe and trailed just 17-16, with a chance to knot the match. But, they made eight errors in the set and lost eight of the last 11 points to go down 2-0.
Baylor dominated the third set from the start and scored six points in a row in a run that included three kills by Milana, who hit .364 with 11 kills.
"Something I've been really working on is efficiency, working on my different shots," Milana said. "I think if I can be a more diverse swing hitter, I can really help out this team. You have Yossi killing it, Kara, Shelly and Marieke (van der Mark). Those are all dominant hitters. So, if I can complement that and make some shots here and be a relief for those hitters, that's all I can ask for."
Sixth-ranked Texas (9-2, 3-0) which has won seven of the last eight Big 12 championships, and Baylor are the only teams in the league that haven't lost a conference match. The Bears host Kansas State (6-8, 1-2) at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Ferrell Center.
"Texas has won the conference X amount of years, and it's still their conference to lose until somebody does something about it," McGuyre said. "But, we don't play them until the end of the month, and K-State's good. And we've seen a lot of upsets in the top 10, as well as conference."
McGuyre said the crowd, particularly for a Wednesday night, "was phenomenal."
"That brought just so much joy to my heart because our girls are playing so well and we got to share that with so many great people tonight," he said. "I love the Lord, and I'd probably still say go to church over volleyball. But if not, let's worship together with how we play and do that on a Wednesday night."
THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas – No. 1 Baylor volleyball (12-0, 2-0 Big 12) broke two program records in its 3-0 sweep over Oklahoma (10-4, 2-1 Big 12) Wednesday night at the Ferrell Center, 25-16, 25-19, 25-12.
BU is on a program-best 19-set winning streak dating back to Sept. 12, and the 12-0 start to the season is the best in school history. Both records were previously held by the 2009 squad as they went 11-0 to open the year and won 17 consecutive sets.
Baylor remains the only undefeated team in the country and won its fourth-straight home match over OU for the first time since the 1998-2001 seasons.
Junior Yossiana Pressley led the way with 14 kills on a .379 efficiency while senior Gia Milana followed with 12 kills on a .364 percentage. Pressley also recorded her third double-double of the season with 10 digs.
Tara Wulf led all defenders with 11 digs while four Bears recorded two blocks against the Sooners and held them to a .011 attack effort.
Baylor and Oklahoma came out swinging for the 12-12 tie in the first set. Then, the Bears went on a 6-1 run behind five kills to force an OU timeout. BU kept the lead and hit a match-high .414 to take the opener, 25-16.
Baylor piled on an early 5-1 lead, but a ball handling error tied it up at 9-9 in set two. The Bears used a 3-1 run to force another Sooner timeout at 21-17. The Baylor defense kept the pressure on the Sooners to force four consecutive errors to take the set, 25-19.
Sophomore Shanel Bramschreiber's ace made it a 13-6 lead in the third set, and a 6-0 run anchored by Pressley's serve helped close it out in three, 25-12.

On the win…
"I'm really pleased with some of the things we're doing with our backcourt defense. I thought Tara (Wulf) did a good job. We weren't getting dumped on by the setter, and their setter has been successful with that this year. Those are little things that add up. Kara (McGhee) had so many great block touches. They're not going down as stuff blocks, but they're block touches. I think anytime you saw a long rally happen that we ended up winning is because she was busting her butt to the right to slow the ball down and then we could go convert, or bust her butt to the left. I was upset that we didn't terminate on some of those, but she stayed engaged in that one play where there were two or three touches that were great, great blocks. A lot of work for just one point."

These girls are doing some great things that not the rest of the country is doing when it comes to volleyball and the plays and the oohs and aahs when we're doing some of the things that these talented girls can do. So, to be able to share that with such a great fanbase tonight, that was awesome."
