McLane Stadium Needs to be a ‘Raucous, Raucous Environment’ for Homecoming.
Baylor Bear Insider Jerry Hill gives his three takeaways from Monday's weekly press conference with head coach Matt Rhule discussing the No. 22/23 Bears' 31-12 road win over Kansas State and Saturday's 3 p.m. Homecoming matchup against Texas Tech that will be televised by FS1:
- DRIVING ON LEFT SIDE OF ROAD: Redshirt freshman Casey Phillips had trained all week to make his first start at right tackle and then had to switch over to left tackle when Connor Galvin suffered an injury in the first quarter of Saturday's game at Kansas State. "That's about as hard a move as there is," Rhule said. "It's like driving on the left side of the road, but in the Indy 500, not like down the street. It's as fast as you can get it. And the muscle movements are different. You have to flip everything in your brain, your body is different. So, all those things considered, I thought he did a good job. Casey has all the talent in the world to be a dominant, dominant offensive lineman. And he's a freshman."
- THIS BETTER NOT BE THE HIGH POINT: Rhule made it clear that he doesn't even address Baylor being ranked in the national polls for the first time in three years. "I'm the same guy at 5-0 that I was at 0-5 (in 2017)," he said. "We didn't work all year to be 5-0 and No. 23 in the country. If this is the high point, then we had a bad year. . . What's really cool is we have a bunch of seniors and juniors who have been 6-0, they've been 0-5, they've been 5-0. Not many people have had these experiences they've had. You aren't what people say you are, you are what you put on tape and how you play this week."
- BE RESPECTFUL, BUT ROWDY: Having just gone to Kansas State's Bill Snyder Family Stadium, where the stadium gets so loud that it makes it nearly impossible to audible, Rhule is hoping the Homecoming crowd at McLane Stadium will have a similar greeting for Texas Tech. "It should be a raucous, raucous environment," he said. "I hope whoever comes is loud and respectful, yet really rowdy. I hope it's hard for the other team. We sat there last week, with the Kansas State student section behind us, and it was too loud to hear. So, I hope it's like that on Saturday."
