Scott Drew gets to check something else off his bucket list when 16th-ranked Baylor (1-0) faces Washington at 8:30 p.m. CST Friday in the Armed Forces Classic at 5,000-seat Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage, Alaska.
"It's a great opportunity, it's a bucket list for me, to be able to go up there and give back to the soldiers for what they sacrifice and do for us," said Drew, whose team opened with a 105-61 blowout of Central Arkansas on Tuesday. "I know the players are going to love the uniforms. I had a chance to see them, and they'll be fired up for that."
Washington was picked third in the Pac-12 preseason media poll behind Oregon and Colorado despite losing its top four scorers from a 27-9 team that made it to the second round of the NCAA tournament. Isaiah Stewart and Jaden McDaniels, a pair of 6-9 freshmen, are McDonald's All-Americans and preseason first-team all-conference picks who are projected to go in the first round of the NBA Draft.
"The great thing is Washington is one of the most talented teams in the country," Drew said. "You can look at the NBA Draft boards, and they've got a couple of guys on there for a reason. They're really good players."
While Baylor already has a game under its belt, plus closed scrimmages against LSU and Texas A&M, the Huskies are opening the regular season after a scrimmage at TCU and an 87-63 win over Western Washington last Thursday.
In the Bears' opener on Tuesday, they drained a Ferrell Center-record 18 3-pointers, including eight treys and 30 points by sophomore guard Jared Butler. They jumped out to a 19-0 lead in the first six minutes and were up 53-32 at halftime.
"We were definitely locked-in on defense, and that was one of our points of emphasis going into the game," Butler said. "We locked in, and we knew scout pretty well. We try to get three stops in a row every time, and that's what we did."
Other than walk-ons Obim Okeke and Jackson Moffatt, who came in for the last few minutes, everyone else scored. Devonte Bandoo and Freddie Gillespie scored 15 and 14 points, respectively, while UNC Asheville transfer MaCio Teague had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
"I think what you saw from Baylor was they have those pieces that they can plug in," Central Arkansas coach Russ Pennell said. "I think if he wants, he can play small. I think he can play a little bit bigger. He's just got a lot of weapons that are going to make them a good team."
Teague, who knocked down four 3-pointers in his Baylor debut, said the Bears are ready to take that next step with Friday's game against Washington.
"I think the foreign tour (to Italy) helped us. The two scrimmages we had were very competitive, and I think that will help us out a lot," he said. "I think it will be a good step for our program to go and compete against a good Pac-12 team."
Friday's game will be televised by ESPN, with Dan Shulman, Jay Bilas and Seth Greenberg calling the action.
The Bears will host Texas State in a sandwich game next Friday, Nov. 15, before going back on the road for the Myrtle Beach Invitational in Conway, S.C.
"We tend to sometimes overreact on a big win or a big loss," Drew said. "We have to try to find ways to get us better and make sure everybody knows it's one game, it's not the season. Just make sure they're grounded, it's all a process, and we've got a long way to go."
