Three Bears land on the first team for the first time in program history
PITTSBURGH – Baylor volleyball senior Shelly Stafford and juniors Yossiana Pressley and Hannah Lockin are the program's first AVCA Division I First Team All-Americans, released by the organization Wednesday morning.
Pressley and Stafford are the program's first three-time All-Americans while Lockin earns her second national honor. This year's honors bring the Baylor total to 11 all-time selections.
Since Anna Breyfogle and Taylor Barnes were named honorable mention in 2009, the program has had nine All-America selections in the last four seasons under head coach Ryan McGuyre.
"It is a proud and joyful moment to not only celebrate the accomplishment of these three athletes but to also celebrate the entire team that has helped these athletes achieve such incredible success," McGuyre said. "Not only have these athletes achieved great heights as athletes, they are all selfless in servants in their approach. I'm thankful for their blessing upon Baylor. It runs deep throughout our team in multiple ways."
Stafford becomes the first Bear to earn a spot on the first, second or third team twice in her career. After earning Second Team All-America honors last season, she earns a spot on the first team after being named to the All-Region and All-Big 12 First Teams for the third-straight year. She currently holds the program record for career hitting percentage with a .347 efficiency.
"We are filled with joyful tears as it was Shelly Stafford's dream to be able to celebrate these awards with all of her teammates," McGuyre said. "Last year, she was alone on stage for a second team award. This year she joins the stage with Yossi and Lockin and all her teammates in attendance. When one is honored, all are honored. This captures Shelly's heart perfectly."
On the outside, Pressley has amassed 521 kills and recorded 29 double-digit kill matches. The unanimous Big 12 Player of the Year and Baylor's first Southwest Region Player of the Year honoree is top five in the nation in kills and points per set heading into this weekend.
She is a Honda Sport Award finalist and was last weekend's Waco Regional Most Outstanding Player.
Lockin earns her second All-America honor and heads into the national semifinals with All-Region and unanimous Big 12 Setter of the Year honors. She leads the team with a personal-best 11.48 assists per set and has the team lead in service aces.
"Lockin's ability to distribute the ball this season has been great," McGuyre said. "Her ability to be a threat opens up Shelly and Yossi. Shelly's kills open up Yossi, and Yossi's kills open up everyone else."
Lockin, Pressley, Stafford and the Bears face No. 4 seed and fifth-ranked Wisconsin in the NCAA National Semifinals on Thursday at 6 p.m. CT at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh. The match will be televised on ESPN.
