BAYLOR POSTGAME QUOTES
Baylor Head Coach Scott Drew
Opening Statement…
"
John Morris told me when we were down 17 or 19 the probability was 99 percent we would lose the game, so I quickly responded, 'So you're telling me there's a chance.' I really credit the guys for persevering tonight. I thought in the first half, they did a great job frustrating us. They made a lot of shots, controlled the tempo. With King (McClure) coming back, trying to get a rotation was tough. He did a great job leading the guys verbally, but I think going forward we'll get some more practice days with everybody being healthy. Really credit to (Devonte) Bandoo, Jared (Butler), 'Rio (Kegler), Mark (Vital) and Freddie (Gillespie) for getting us on a run and finishing it off, everyone in the huddle being locked in and encouraging them. It was one of those great Baylor wins. The fans were tremendous. They gave us a great lift."
On coming back after trailing by 19 points…
"First thing is the guys never gave up. Second thing is we got a couple stops and made a couple shots. And then the fans got involved. Before that, we really didn't give them much to get involved for. I think that all feeds off of itself, especially when you can start making a run and the crowd gets into it, the guys got confidence, they got energy."
On overcoming adversity…
"Most teams this time of year when you're in these situations you aren't going to have the energy to come back and win. It takes a team and that's why we've been good all year. Different people have stepped up. The team likes each other, they encourage each other and I think that makes it a lot easier to be great teammates and cheer for each other."
Baylor Redshirt Sophomore Mario Kegler
On the turning point after the technical foul…
"At that time it was, you got to go leave it all out there. That unified everybody, got everybody going. First it was everyone holding their head down and after that, I think everyone was fired up."
On setting career highs in his last two games…
"Just staying with it. Keep believing in myself, keep giving it all to God and just staying in the gym."
Baylor Freshman Jared Butler
On coming back from down 19…
"The game was tough in the first half, but we came in the locker room and said no matter what, stay together, no matter what, play with joy. I didn't realize it was that bad. I just always kept a faith, kept encouraging, tried to make some plays, not trying to win it all at one time. These guys, everyone on the team stepped up. That was a fun game."
On his made 3-pointer in OT…
"It was so important. I hit like two or three three's, but these guys were hitting three's that we needed, so I felt like I needed to hit some three's for us too. That's what I'm trying to do -- just help the team out and make winning plays."
Baylor Junior Devonte Bandoo
On his second half…
"I didn't have a great (first) half. All the coaching staff told me I needed to step up. I knew in the second half I had to make a difference. I just tried to stay locked in and that's what I did in the second half."
TEXAS POSTGAME QUOTES
Texas Head Coach Shaka Smart
Opening Statement…
"It's just a heartbreaker. Baylor deserves a lot of credit for the way they battled back and the obvious, biggest factor in the second half really. I don't want to say the only factor, but it was the way that they offensive rebounded. We did a good job in the first half (of) holding them to four offensive rebounds but we were not able to grab hold of some of those balls that looked like they were right in our hands, and Baylor did a really good job of making us pay, particularly at the 3-point line. We'll go back and chart it, but I think that if you look at their first-shot percentage, our guys did a really good job for the most part defensively, but that only matters if you can stop them from getting the second shot, and obviously we didn't do that in the second half."
On the design of the last play…
"The inbounds play was designed to go to Matt (Coleman III). They did a good job of taking him away with two guys. We wanted to get to Matt or Courtney (Ramey), but those guys were denied, so Jaxson (Hayes) flashed something that we run a lot, and Jackson has done an awesome job all year in that inbounds play. I think he maybe thought they were going to foul right away, or maybe he did get hit and that maybe bumped him off balance, I don't know. I have to look at the play."
On how to get win last-minute challenges…
"We just got to be one play better. In a game like today, we've got to get one more defensive rebound, we got to make one more free throw. We shot 6-11 from the line. Obviously, you can look at the turnover at the end, can't do that. We got to contest the three better one more time. I thought the three that
Jared Butler hit when we were up six on Matt at the top of the key, that was as big a shot as there was in the game because if you keep them from making a three, it's a two-possession game even if they hit a two. So, we've just got to be one play better. All I know as a coach is to keep fighting and working to go grab that one play, and you know tonight we're out there playing with other than Elijah (Mitrou-Long), all freshman and sophomores and I thought those guys they really fought. Baylor definitely out-battled us on a lot of those rebounds, but we've just got to be one play better."
