Match decided in three-set singles dual on the No. 1 singles court
THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas — The Baylor women's tennis team (5-5) dropped a 4-3 decision against Washington State (7-1) at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center Friday.
Washington State took the doubles point following victories at Courts one and three. Then, Baylor took three of the first five singles matches to knot the score at three before No. 63-ranked Michaela Bayerlova outlasted No. 70 Livia Kraus 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-2 in three sets to clinch the victory.
Jessica Hinojosa took a three-set win on the No. 3 court, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, while Angie Shakhraichuk defeated her opponent, 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 4 position. Freshman Paula Barañano won her second-straight decision by taking a 6-2, 6-2 win on the No. 5 court.
The schools had not faced each other since March of 1991 prior to Friday's meeting, and the Cougars' victory evened the all-time series at one match apiece.
NOTABLES VS. WASHINGTON STATE
• Baylor's doubles duo of Jessica Hinojosa and Paula Barañano earned a 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot – it was their first match as a pair this season.
• Freshman Paula Barañano recorded her third singles victory of the season at the No. 5 spot to even her record at 3-3 on the season.
WHAT'S NEXT
Baylor travels to Evanston, Ill. to challenge Northwestern at 3 p.m. (CT) on Feb. 15 and will face Illinois in Urbana-Champaign on at 11 a.m. on Feb. 17.
