BAYLOR POSTGAME QUOTES
Baylor Head Coach Scott Drew
Opening Statement…
"I thought our effort was good enough to win, our execution wasn't. We didn't rebound well enough to win. We turned it over too many times. Really credit Kansas State, because at the end of the day they made big threes late. The last nine minutes of the game, they won the game by the way they performed. Coming into the season I knew they returned everybody from that Elite Eight team. It's a team that not only could win the Big 12, but could win a national championship because you don't normally return that kind of experience with that kind of talent. Coach Weber has done a great job with them and we knew what a challenge it would be. Obviously, it was even more challenging without Makai [Mason] and King [McClure]. We're starting to get a lot of guys at the end of the bench, so we need more guys in uniforms and less in suits.
On the energy tonight…
"I thought the fans were great, I thought the players really competed and as a coach you hate it. I think to relate it to real life, you work real hard and get a bad grade, you work real hard and you don't get a paycheck, that's how our guys feel. I feel for them because they competed hard enough to win, we just didn't execute well enough."
On running out of gas…
"Yeah, I think first, you exerted a lot of energy and effort. Second, you had guys playing more minutes than normal. I think that would be natural."
On continuing to reinvent after losing players to injuries…
"The real answer is really frustrating because you know you're going to have some injuries, you don't know you're going to have so many or season-long, multiple-game injuries. Usually people get the flu, tweak this or that, miss a game or two, but Jake [Lindsey], Tristan [Clark], Makai, King, that's a lot of guys now."
Baylor Junior Devonte Bandoo
On making his first Big 12 start…
"I just was trying to go out there and execute whatever Coach Drew wanted me to do. If it was just passing the ball or scoring the ball, I was trying to just play the way he wanted me to and make the right reads."
On running out of gas…
"I'll be honest, I haven't played this type of minutes in a long time. I was a little gassed, it's something I'll have to get used to. I feel like those two big threes they hit really brought the momentum down. That's something we have to adapt to. When teams make a big play like that, we have to slow the game down, try to get to the free throw line or find something easy."
On what he can take away from a game like this…
"Just try to stay humble. Ask King [McClure], ask Makai [Mason], like what do you see here or what should I do in this type of situation. Just learn from my seniors, that's the only thing I really can do because they've been here before. Makai is our leading scorer so I know he knows the right reads and what to do on the court. King is a tremendous defensive player so I can pick things up from him if I'm going to be on the court more."
Baylor Redshirt Junior Freddie Gillespie
On the team's effort tonight without two starters…
"They are starters, so their leadership is important. But they provided great leadership off the bench. I think the biggest thing on the court is just being one unit."
On the momentum swing after leading 48-41…
"For us, even though they did go on that run, we weren't out of it. I think we could have responded better to that. I think that's something we can learn from and work on."
On being able to respond in tough situations…
"Bench players get recruited too. They also play basketball. They also were highly recruited. I think it's a good job by the coaches of being prepared, being ready. We stay competitive in practice. When their time comes, people step up."
KANSAS STATE POSTGAME QUOTES
Kansas State Head Coach Bruce Weber
On giving Coach Drew credit and being physical…
"They had to revamp the roster and they have injuries. They are quick and they are physical. Our leadoff video was them crashing the glass. They are just playing so physically, and they wore down at the end of the first half and the second half."
On defense…
"They didn't have much depth and they protected the paint and I thought we moved the ball earlier and we missed some shots, but we settled down and finally we got some inside touches – those easy layups are key. I think our experience made a difference. We have had guys that have won here."
Kansas State Guard Kamau Stokes
On fighting from behind…
"We weren't down a whole lot and it all came down to who was going to be the tougher team. I feel like we made the tougher plays. Little plays made the game for us."
On second half starting off rough…
"Our shots weren't falling. We had plenty of good shots and they weren't falling."
On team vs. personal goals…
"I knew I needed to come out and play, no matter how many points I get. Being a leader on this team is coming out to get the win."
On Baylor being down two starters…
"It didn't affect our mindset, maybe for them. We came into the game knowing no one can have a big night. We have had nights where our guys are out and we need to make sure no one can have a big night."
On Baylor on the glass…
"We worked on it, this whole practice – getting the ball off the rim and turning to find your guy. Baylor is aggressive and the minute you turn your head, they are coming. So, you need to locate your guy. That's how you attack that."
Kansas State Guard Cartier Diarra
On being down with eight minutes left…
"Just had to make plays for the team. Last time we were in the press conference, I needed to score 10 or more and I didn't have that going into the second half. I needed to be more aggressive and get that 10 in. I got that 10 in and we got the W, so I'm excited."
On team vs. personal goals…
"Setting a goal and believing in myself – it's been leading to wins. Even if I score zero points, it doesn't matter if we get the win. We are family and that's all that matters."
On Baylor on the glass…
"We have been doing a bunch of rebounding drills in practice and getting ready for the Baylor offensive rebound and we knew that they have 37.5 rebounds per game. We just made sure they didn't get as many rebounds as they do, and I think that worked today. We really needed that, and we were battling off."
