Sundays are obviously special to Andy Thomas.
After collecting a career-high-tying three doubles in last Sunday's 10-3 win over Nebraska, the junior DH was a perfect 5-for-5 with four doubles – one off the program and NCAA record – to lead a 22-hit attack in Baylor baseball's 14-3 win over Cal Poly (7-11) in Sunday's series finale at Baylor Ballpark.
"Sundays are good for me so far," said Thomas, who saw his batting average spike by over 100 points from .258 to .361. "I'm loving it."
Since returning from a bout with mononucleosis three weeks ago, Thomas is 9-for-12 with eight doubles and five RBI in his three Sunday games.
"We just might wear this uniform every single day," said Baylor coach Steve Rodriguez, whose team improved to 13-5 in winning the series over Cal Poly. "I'm really happy for him after getting past mono. People don't realize how hard it is to come back and try to get your timing down. Timing during game-like situations is not exactly the easiest thing to do, and Shea (Langeliers) is dealing with that a little bit right now. He's laying really good swings on things, but the timing is just off. But, Andy being able to go out there and do what he did, it's pretty awesome."
Thomas was far from alone, though.
After getting just nine hits combined in the first two games of the series, all nine Baylor starters had at least one hit, with multi-hit games from Nick Loftin (3-for-5), Richard Cunningham (3-for-5), Davis Wendzel (3-for-5), Davion Downey (2-for-4) and Josh Bissonette (2-for-4).
"That's huge," said Wendzel, who had an RBI single in the third and a three-run homer in the fifth. "Any day you can come to the field and have 22 hits up there, and everyone is getting up there and swinging and its going our way, that's what we love."
The Mustangs (7-11) actually struck first, getting a two-out single by Myles Emmerson to plate Tate Samuelson.
Rodriguez said he took out sophomore starter Tyler Thomas after two innings, because "we didn't want to just leave him out there and force a bad outing for him and our team. He went out there and did what we wanted him to do." Making his fourth start of the season, Thomas gave up a run on two hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
Freshman Blake Helton picked up his first win, tossing four scoreless innings and giving up just two hits and three walks.
"As a freshman coming in with a three-pitch mix, being able to throw all the pitches for strikes, I was really happy with what he did out there," Rodriguez said. "He's pretty composed and pretty mature for a young man. So, being able to jump into that situation like he did was pretty impressive."
After Wendzel tied it with his RBI single to left-center in the bottom of the third, Thomas followed with his second double of the day and Davion Downey had a two-out, two-run single up the middle to give the Bears the lead.
Cole Haring lined a two-run shot over the left-field wall to make it a 5-1 game, his third homer of the season and first of three long balls hit by Baylor in the offensive explosion.
Wendzel's three-run blast in the fourth came on his third try. After yanking one just outside of the left-field foul pole, a ruling that was upheld under video review, he was early on a changeup and then crushed a slider to the left-center field gap.
"The first one I hit, I thought it was fair, and (the umpires) obviously didn't agree," said Wendzel, who is hitting .414. "Rod came up to me and said, 'Be prepared for the bad news.' I just made my mindset, 'It's probably going to be foul, they're probably not going to overturn it.' I wasn't going to give up an at-bat because I was going to be upset about it."
Already up 8-1, the Bears added six runs on six hits in the sixth inning, starting with Loftin's solo shot to left. Hitting for the cycle in in the inning, Baylor also got singles from Cunningham, Langeliers and Chase Wehsener, doubles by Thomas and Downey and Bissonette's second triple of the season.
"It's good to see him back. He's a huge part of our lineup," Wendzel said of Thomas. "I think he'll take a 5-for-5 day with no home runs. That's not a bad day."
Daniel Caruso and Anderson Needham continued Baylor's scoreless streak in the seventh and eighth before the Mustangs scored twice in the ninth off Loftin.
Baylor plays Sam Houston State (12-5) at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Huntsville before opening Big 12 with a three-game series at home against West Virginia (12-7).
THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas – The Bears' offense took over as they blasted 14 runs on a season-high 22 hits to take the rubber game over visiting Cal Poly, 14-3, on Sunday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.
The Bears (13-5) were led by Andy Thomas, who was 5-for-5 on the day with one RBI, and four of those hits were doubles. Davis Wendzel led the team with 4 RBIs on 3-for-5 hitting, including a three-run home. Nick Loftin and Richard Cunningham each had three hits on the day and Loftin and Cole Haring each blasted their third home runs of the season.
Overall, all nine batters in the lineup had at least one hit on the day, with six having multi-hit performances. Also, eight-of-nine batters had at least one RBI.
For the second-straight game Cal Poly (7-11) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but today the Bears were able to answer in a big way. After the Mustangs plated a run in the top of the second inning, the Bears answered with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the second inning. The Bears plated five runs on four hits in the inning. Wendzel brought home the game-tying run on an RBI single, before Davion Downey followed with two RBIs on a single of his own. Haring them stepped into the box and launched his third homer of the year, a two-run shot to left to put the Bears up, 5-1.
The Bears were not done, however, as they added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. After back-to-back one-out singles from Cunningham and Loftin, Wendzel had an incredible at-bat, where he launched two would-be home runs, but both were foul, before straightening it out for a three-run shot, his third homer of the year.
Up 8-1 in the fifth, the Bears were cruising on the mound, as starter Tyler Thomas went 2.0 innings before giving way to Blake Helton, who tossed a career-high 4.0 scoreless innings.
The Bears added six more runs in a huge sixth inning where the Bears batted around. Loftin led off the inning with a solo home run, his third of the year to make it 9-1. Then with a runner on second and one out, Thomas delivered his fourth double of the day, this one an RBI double to make it 10-1. With two on and two out, Josh Bissonette delivered his second triple of the year to drive home two more. The two-out rally continued as Chase Wehsener singled through the right side to bring home the sixth run of the inning, giving the Bears a 14-1 lead.
On the mound, Daniel Caruso made his second appearance in as many days, tossing one scoreless inning before giving way to Anderson Needham who put up a zero in the eighth.
In the ninth inning, the Mustangs collected two runs on two hits off Nick Loftin to make the final score, 14-3.
Helton earned his first collegiate win in the victory, while Mustangs starter Darren Nelson took the loss to fall to 1-3.
