New program recognizes and rewards students who achieve their personal-best term GPA.
Including 32 December graduates, a total of 232 Baylor student-athletes were recognized as BU Academic Champions at the Feb. 27 men's basketball game at the Ferrell Center.
A new initiative through Baylor's Student-Athlete Center for Excellence, the BU Academic Champions program recognizes and rewards students who achieve their personal-best term GPA, along with all students who earn a 3.5 or higher GPA and graduates.
Emily DeRatt, Associate Director of Academic Services, said the new program continues to recognize "students who are maximizing their potential in the classroom."
DeRatt said, "The thought process is to incorporate additional academic benchmarks, other than the highest GPAs, into our recognition."
Some of the sports with the biggest rosters led the way in student-athletes recognized as Academic Champions, with women's track/cross country leading the way with 39, followed by football (38), equestrian (34), soccer (22) and acrobatics & tumbling (21).
The first round of Academic Champion recipients were given the gray T-shirts they wore for the halftime ceremony, and a tiered reward system, has been created to honor students progressively as they continue to meet the Academic Champion criteria in future semesters. Students will also continue to be recognized publicly at athletic events reflecting their hard work in the previous semester.
