BAYLOR POSTGAME QUOTES
Baylor Head Coach Scott Drew
Opening Statement…
"Not how we drew it up for senior night. You look at the stats, and you hold them to 39%, 5-for-29 from 3. We out-rebound them offensively and defensively, (and) you only have 10 turnovers, but the things that stood out to me is why we've been successful, is the second-chance points have been huge for us all year, and today for whatever reason, we didn't have them. So, 8-to-3, credit them for getting second-chance points and not us. And then from the free throw line, we got to be better than 68 percent to win a close game. At the end of the day, I'm disappointed for the seniors, disappointed in how we played this game in the Ferrell Center. We've been so good in the last five minutes of the game. Oklahoma State -- give them a lot of credit. They're playing great basketball. They took (Texas) Tech to overtime down there, which we all know is a tough thing to do and could've won that game and could've beat Kansas. They're playing well and we needed to play better tonight."
On the offensive ball movement…
"You got to credit Oklahoma State with the way they defend, it's a lot of denial. What you have is you have more one-on-one play, and you have gaps to penetrate. Up there, I thought we did a better job penetrating then kick out for threes. First of all, we were 7-for-24, so I think if you hit a couple of those, it opens things up, they close out a little faster, gives you more driving. But that and I thought (in) the zone, we were stagnant. All year long when people have zoned us, we hit three quick, and they've gotten out of it. Today we didn't."
On the positive defense…
"I thought the critical part was when (Thomas) Dziagwa hit that three. We had finally gotten a little separation and had a little momentum, and from a free throw we give up a wide open three and you just can't have those lapses. That's unacceptable."
On Jared Butler fouling out…
"He was really playing well, and when he came back in, he gave us a great lift and a great spurt, so it hurt losing him, definitely."
On rebuilding the momentum…
"Well, you definitely want to get some momentum in March. The biggest games are ahead of us so hopefully we can do that."
Baylor Senior Makai Mason
On the plan for the last play…
"We were trying to get a shooter in the corner. They read well (and) switched out, so (I) had to throw it over the top, (but) there was nobody really open."
On the mentality of senior night…
"Especially the guys that have given so much to the program like King (McClure) and Jake (Lindsey), you want to win, win for them. Obim's (Okeke) given two-plus years as well. Yeah, it's tough but we have to bounce back. We have a big one on Saturday."
Baylor Redshirt Junior Freddie Gillespie
On the sluggish feel of tonight…
"Reality is, I think that they have five or six scholarship (players) that they are playing right now. Those guys are getting the majority of the minutes, so I think the fact that we came out kind of lethargic, we didn't know our place with them. On defense, they can basically take a rest break and on offense, trying to attack."
On not losing momentum…
"I know it's tough because we were feeling good. But the reality is you cannot sleep on anyone in this league, and I think at this point in March, if you can't build the momentum then you just have to make it yourself. Just bring energy to practice, get in the gym extra, watch your film, and get yourself excited. I remember watching Champ Week when I was 9 years old, so that should be momentum enough."
OKLAHOMA STATE POSTGAME QUOTES
Oklahoma State Head Coach Mike Boynton
Opening Statement…
"First of all, I'm really proud of our kids for fighting the way they did against a really good team on the road. It shows a bit of our character. We have had a tough season for our guys. Coach Drew did a great job with his guys and we were just a little bit better today. We made a few more shots and that goes to our junior captains - our leaders. I'm really proud of that."
On Isaac Likekele...
"We call him ice… He was sensational. He was what we hoped he would be. He has had some freshman struggles with some ups and downs, but he has a lot of building and his ability to get into the lane has affected his teammates to get shots, so he definitely led the charge for us. It was a team effort, no doubt about it. Our three captains shot the ball particularly well and on the glass."
On team character…
"At the end of the day, it's a player game. They have been raised the right way, they have great parents. I am just fortunate that I have the opportunity to be with them every day. They really help me more than I help them - they make me a better coach."
