Unable to dig out of an early 7-0 hole, Baylor softball dropped its eighth in a row as 15th-ranked Texas Tech finished off a three-game sweep with an 11-6 win in Sunday's series finale at Getterman Stadium.
Twice rallying from eight-run deficits, the Lady Bears (15-24, 2-11) produced double-digit hits and scored their most runs since March 12 and had the tying run in the on-deck circle when Tech pitcher Missy Zoch struck out freshman Kassidy Krupit with the bases loaded.
"We fought," said coach Glenn Moore, who hasn't lost nine straight games in his 19-year Baylor career. "It's easy to throw in the towel, and I think many teams would right now. And we're still hanging on. Maybe by a thread, but we're still fighting."
Giving sophomore pitcher Sidney Holman her first day off in conference play, Moore gave junior first baseman Goose McGlaun (0-1) her first start in the circle. Tech (33-8, 6-6) took the early lead with a two-run homer by Trenity Edwards and then tacked on three more in the second and two in the third to go up 7-0.
The Red Raiders added a run off McGlaun in the fifth, with Baylor switching between McGlaun and Krupit, and had a chance to win their second straight run-rule game.
But, Nicky Dawson greeted reliever Morgan Hornback with a triple to center and scored Baylor's first run of the game on a sac fly by freshman Lou Gilbert. The Lady Bears cut it to 8-3 on a McGlaun single and line-drive, two-run homer by Krupit, her ninth of the year.
"I think we came with a different approach," said Dawson, who was 3-for-4 for the day, adding a 10-pitch walk off Zoch (14-5) in the seventh. "One thing we've really been talking about is energy, and that's something (Tech) had in their dugout. We felt like if we matched that, we could have good at-bats and play good defense and be focused, and really just have everything together. I was really impressed with our fight, no matter what the score was."
Dawson also had some defensive gems with a pair of double plays, including one that was lined off the pitcher's glove, and then flipped to first from the outfield grass for the final out in the fifth on a Heaven Burton grounder.
"I believe both of the ones I turned were off Kassidy," Dawson said. "It's fun, it's always good to have something to help spark us. Actually, both of those plays, I saw a little bit of spark. They're always fun to turn, but I've never turned one like that."
Any chance of a late-inning comeback seemed to dissipate when Tech plated three in the top of the seventh on a two-run homer by 9-hole hitter Taylor Satchell and Breanna Russell's RBI double down the right-field line to push the lead to 11-3.
Moore said Krupit "mixed it up, and that's what we needed. It's a long shot to think that's going to work, but there was a possibility with the offense we saw late in the game of giving us a chance. But, they're a strong offensive team."
Again, the Lady Bears didn't go down without a fight. Freshman Ana Watson drove in a pair with a double to right and then came around to score on a Madi O'Neal single and error by the first baseman on the play.
Coming back in for Hornback, Zoch had back-to-back walks that loaded the bases, sandwiched around a pair of strikeouts to wiggle out of the jam and end the game.
"We finally put up some double-digit hits on a team, and I think we can build on that momentum in a week of games that we can compete and possibly get some wins in," Moore said. "You always want the end result to be more favorable, but they're a good team. And when they throw their best at us, they're really tough."
Baylor, staying home for its next eight games, will try to snap the losing skid with a Tuesday doubleheader against Lamar (20-24) before hosting last-place Iowa State (23-18, 1-8) in a three-game series starting Thursday.
WACO, Texas – Baylor (15-24, 2-11) plated all six of its runs in the final three innings as the Lady Bears' rally fell short against No. 15 Texas Tech (33-8, 6-6), 11-6, Sunday afternoon at Getterman Stadium.
The Red Raiders took an 8-0 lead heading to the bottom of the fifth inning with things looking like they might end in run-rule fashion for the second straight game. The Lady Bears, however, had something to say about that.
Nicky Dawson led things off in the bottom of the fifth with a triple to the center field wall. It marked the first triple of the year for Dawson and sixth of her career. With Dawson on third, Lou Gilbert's fly out to left field brought the first run of the day home for Baylor. And the Lady Bears were just getting started. Goose McGlaun followed with a single up the middle, and then it was time for Kassidy Krupit who jacked her ninth home run of the season over the left field wall.
Baylor's three runs in the fifth inning shut the door on any kind of run rule victory Texas Tech was hoping for. Both teams went scoreless through the sixth inning before the Red Raiders plated three more runs in the top of the seventh to take an 11-3 lead.
The heart of Baylor's lineup was due up in the bottom of the seventh inning, and they delivered. McGlaun got things going with a single to shortstop. She then advanced to second off a wild pitch. Krupit walked to reach base for the third time Sunday afternoon to put runners on first and second for Baylor with no outs.
With Alyssa Avalos in to run for Krupit, Ana Watson cleared the bases with a double to right field. That scored two runs and put a runner on second with one out.
The lefty Madi O'Neal then stepped to the plate and laid down a bunt toward first base. O'Neal would have been safe anyway, but the throw by the Texas Tech first baseman went wild which moved her to second and scored Watson.
Defensively, Baylor rotated between Krupit and McGlaun in the circle. Krupit finished with four strikeouts on the day.
While Dawson had a good day offensively with a 3-for-4 showing at the plate, she also turned a pair of double plays off nifty line drive catches. The first one tipped off Krupit's glove, and Dawson tracked it down and dove to reach second base to get the Tech runner out for not tagging up. The second one Dawson leapt in the air for and then immediately threw to McGlaun at first to get the runner.
