Braden Bailey still remembers that feeling from three years ago when he helped the Baylor men's golf team rally from a six-shot deficit on the back nine to get back to the NCAA Championship for the first time in six years.
"My freshman year, I feel like we just tried to squeak in, because it had been a while since we had made it to the national championship," said Bailey, who is playing in his fourth consecutive NCAA regional with the Louisville (Ky.) Regional that starts Monday at the University of Louisville Golf Club. "We squeaked by, but it was a lot more stressful. The last two years, we went in with the goal and the mindset that we want to win this regional."
While the Bears are seeded fifth in the 13-team regional, they don't want to just "squeak by" and make it to their fourth straight NCAA Championship, they want to win it.
Top-ranked Oklahoma State is seeded No. 1 after winning the Big 12 title, followed by 11th-ranked Auburn, No. 13 North Florida, 22nd-ranked Louisville and No. 25 Baylor. Rounding out the field and vying for one of the five qualifying spots are Arkansas State, Iowa State, West Virginia, Arizona, Mississippi State, New Mexico, Jacksonville State and Southern Illinois.
"If we did what we're supposed to do, relative to rankings, we would get the fifth spot," coach Mike McGraw said. "I don't want the fifth spot, I want to win. And if we play like we're trying to win, we should have a very good week."
Baylor is coming off a disappointing sixth-place finish at the Big 12 Championship, but the Bears shot 7-under over the last 36 holes after opening with a 13-over 293 that left them tied for eighth and 20 strokes out of first place.
"We obviously dug a huge hole after one run, but played beautifully after that," McGraw said. "We obviously brought enough good golf to The Greenbrier to have played a good tournament, but when you dig a hole like that it's just every difficult to come back. I was happy with the way the guys played to finish up."
Senior Garrett May heads the lineup this week after closing with a 4-under 66 in the final round at the Big 12 tournament, moving up to a tie for fifth at 5-under 205 and just three shots out of the lead. The rest of the lineup has juniors Colin Kober and Cooper Dossey at 2 and 3, Bailey at 4 and sophomore Ryan Grider at No. 5, with sophomore Mark Reppe in the alternate role.
"We're more motivated now than I think we've been in a long time," said Kober, who actually leads the team with a 71.70-stroke average and three top-10 finishes. "We want to be there for the final match and we want to win the national championship."
McGraw was encouraged by Golfweek's spring-only rankings released Thursday that had Baylor at No. 13, behind only Oklahoma State (1st) and Auburn (11th) among the teams in the Louisville Regional. The Bears had a third-place finish at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate that included wins over No. 4 Vanderbilt, No. 14 LSU and 20th-ranked Texas A&M.
"Even though I feel like we could have played better this spring, we actually played fine," McGraw said. "So, that was kind of neat to see. I think we are probably playing a lot better than any of the recent results."
Kober finished fifth at the Los Cabos tournament, shooting 6-under-par 207, while Reppe had a top-5 finish at The All-American. At the Big 12 tournament, when Grider had to withdraw with an injury, Reppe filled in and posted a scoring round of 2-over-par 72.
"It's not like you're scraping the bottom of the barrel when you throw Mark in there," McGraw said. "He's a really competitive, good player, and it's exciting to know that he's ready to go if we need him. Even more so, he'll be ready the next two years to actually contribute and continue to be one of our best players."
The UofL Golf Club course is new territory for McGraw and the Baylor golf team, but they played a round at Hurstbourne Country Club with similar bent-grass greens on Saturday and then a practice round on the tournament site on Sunday to prepare for the 54-hole regional that runs through Wednesday.
"I've never been to Kentucky in my life, so it will be different," Bailey said, "but we have the drone footage and we've seen the yardage book and what the greens look like, what every hole looks like. So, I feel like I have a really good idea of what the course looks like. The only thing is it will obviously be different grasses than what we have here in Texas. The biggest thing is you'll get up there and see what the rough looks like, how grown out it is, and see how firm and fast the greens are. And then you kind of adjust when you get there."
Baylor is paired with Louisville and Arkansas State in Monday's first round, with tee times between 7 a.m. and 7:44 CDT. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
WACO, Texas – The No. 25-ranked Baylor men's golf team is headed to the NCAA Louisville Regional, which runs Monday through Wednesday at University of Louisville Golf Club. The 54-hole tournament will be contested on a par-71, 7,217-yard course.
Baylor is the No. 5 seed in a 13-team field at the Louisville Regional. The top five teams after three rounds advance to the NCAA Championship, which will be played May 24-29 at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
The Bears are appearing in an NCAA Regional for a 22nd consecutive season, extending one of the nation's longest active streaks, and Baylor is looking to extend its school record with a fourth consecutive NCAA Championship berth. BU is one of 12 programs to appear at every NCAA Championship since 2016, joining Alabama, Arizona State, Auburn, Clemson, Illinois, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Stanford, Texas and Vanderbilt.

He's followed by junior Colin Kober at No. 2, junior Cooper Dossey at No. 3, senior Braden Bailey at No. 4 and sophomore Ryan Grider at No. 5. Sophomore Mark Reppe is the Bears' designated alternate, and the tournament allows for substitutions in the lineup between each round.
The Bears will tee off from No. 10 for Monday's first round in pairings with golfers from Louisville and Arkansas State. Grider has Baylor's first tee time at 7 a.m. CT (8 a.m. in Louisville), and he'll be followed by Bailey at 7:11 a.m., Dossey at 7:22 a.m., Kober at 7:33 a.m. and May at 7:44 a.m. Pairings will be assigned for the second and third rounds based on team and individual standings.
The 13-team Louisville Regional field is comprised of No. 1 seed Oklahoma State, No. 2 Auburn, No. 3 North Florida, No. 4 Louisville, No. 5 Baylor, No. 6 Arkansas State, No. 7 Iowa State, No. 8 West Virginia, No. 9 Arizona, No. 10 Mississippi State, No. 11 New Mexico, No. 12 Jacksonville State and No. 13 Southern Illinois.
Additional regionals will be played in Pullman, Wash. (Palouse Ridge Golf Club), Stanford, Calif. (Stanford Golf Course), Myrtle Beach, S.C. (TPC Myrtle Beach), Athens, Ga. (University of Georgia Golf Course) and Austin, Texas (University of Texas Golf Club).
The 81-team NCAA Tournament field will be narrowed to 30 teams with the top five at each of the six regional sites advancing to the NCAA Championship. Additionally, the low individual on a non-advancing team at each of the six regional sites earns an NCAA Championship berth.
Baylor head coach Mike McGraw has led the Bears to NCAA Regionals in each of his five seasons guiding the program, and BU is riding a school-record streak of three consecutive seasons advancing the NCAA Championship. The Bears have played in eight NCAA Championships (1960, 1966, 1967, 2002, 2010, 2016, 2017, 2018) iun program history.
BU advanced to the NCAA Championship last season by taking third place in a 13-team field at the Bryan Regional. The Bears have finished among the top four teams in each of their last three Regionals, including a tie for fourth place at the 2016 NCAA Kohler (Wisc.) Regional, a tie for first place at the 2017 NCAA Stanford (Calif.) Regional and third place at the 2018 NCAA Bryan (Texas) Regional.
