First time since 2011 Bears have won award in back-to-back months
IRVING, Texas – Baylor's Elodie Chapelet has been named Big 12 Women's Golfer of the Month, giving the Bears back-to-back monthly award winners, as announced Wednesday by the conference office.
Chapelet is the 11th player in program history to win the award, and she joins Gurleen Kaur to give the Bears' back-to-back Big 12 Women's Golfers of the Month for the second time in program history. Hayley Davis and Jaclyn Jansen were recognized in the same two months in 2011, which was the only previous time Baylor has had two different golfers win the monthly honor in the same academic year.
Baylor swept the Big 12 Golfer of the Month awards for October, with Ryan Grider claiming the honor on the men's side. This is the second time the Bears have won both awards in the same month, with Matthew Perrine and Amy Lee sweeping the honors in October 2016.
Chapelet won the Cowgirl Classic by three strokes and was the only player below-par, shooting 1-under 215 in difficult conditions at Oklahoma State's Karsten Creek Golf Course. The title was her first as a Bear and the seventh of her collegiate career. She tied for the tournament lead in par-4 scoring (+3, 4.10), ranked second in par-3 scoring (-2, 2.83), and tied for eighth in par-5 scoring (-2, 4.83).
Chapelet made 10 birdies during the tournament and had just three bogeys in each of the three rounds, making her the only player in the field who didn't make a double bogey during the 54-hole tournament. Her efforts led the Bears to a one-stroke victory over Texas Tech, marking a school-record third-consecutive tournament title. Chapelet tied for 12th place at the Betsy Rawls Invitational with a 54-hole total of 2-under 214, helping the Bears claim an 11-stroke victory over tournament-host Texas.
Chapelet is coming off a second-place finish at the Kissing Tree Invitational, an individual tournament which was played Nov. 1-2 and was not considered part of the Big 12 Golfer of the Month nomination for October. Despite playing only 12 tournaments during her Baylor career, Chapelet is now tied for seventh in program history with five top-5 finishes. She's finished top-10 in eight of 12 tournaments as a Bear.
With her win at the Cowgirl Classic Chapelet moved up to a career-best No. 92 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. She was No. 132 in the Oct. 21 WAGR rankings, prior to winning the Cowgirl Classic individual title.
Baylor finished the fall season undefeated, winning Oklahoma's Schooner Fall Classic, Texas' Betsy Rawls Invitational and Oklahoma State's Cowgirl Classic. The Bears open the spring season Feb. 1-2 at the Trinity Forest Invitational, hosted by SMU at Dallas' Trinity Forest Golf Club.
