Yurang Li tied for 18th, advances to final round of stroke play
NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP DAY 3 RESULTS
CARLSBAD, Calif. – While the Baylor women's golf team's season ended on Sunday with a 25th-place finish at the NCAA Championship at La Costa, junior transfer Yurang Li got to "delay my season for another round" as one of the top nine individuals off non-advancing teams.
Li, who carded her second sub-par round of the tournament with a 1-under 71 on Sunday, is tied for 18th going into Monday's fourth and final round of stroke play.
"It was pretty mundane golf, if you just look at the scorecard," said Li, a California native who transferred from Illinois after her sophomore season. "I left a lot of putts out there. I've been hitting my tee ball probably the best I've hit it in a long time. I'm really hitting a lot of top-quality approach shots. It just would have been nice to capitalize on a couple of them."
Stuck in the windier afternoon round for the second-straight day, the Bears shot 10-over 298 and dropped five spots to finish 25th at 22-over 886, 10 shots off the cut line to the low 15 teams.
Stanford and USC sit atop the team standings at 21-under and 16-under, respectively, while Northwestern grabbed the 15th and final advancing spot at 12-over 876 when Wake Forest's Macy Pate missed a lengthy par putt at No. 9 that dropped the Demon Deacons to 13-over.
"I knew that we had an uphill battle when we had to play in the afternoon again," Goble said, referring to 14 of the 15 advancing teams coming from the morning wave. "That just shows you how strong the difference is playing in the morning versus playing in the afternoon. It's not exactly the finish we were looking for . . . but I'm just happy that there's a celebration that we were here. And it's a great accomplishment for them to have such a long season."
Baylor has played at La Costa in each of the three years the resort has hosted the event, and this was the Bears' sixth-consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship and eighth in nine possible seasons.
"To get an opportunity to come here and play and finish it off," Goble said, "there are a lot of people that would do a lot to be in our position. I definitely don't take that for granted at all."
Silje Ohma, one of two seniors in the lineup, had back-to-back birdies at Nos. 4 and 5 to shoot 2-over-par 74 and tied for 72nd at 5-over 221. Fellow senior Bridget Boczar closed with a 3-over 75 and finished at 9-over 225, while junior transfer Charlotte Brook shot 6-over 78 and finished at 11-over 227.
"Silje has been our heart and soul for four years," Goble said. "I think it's really cool that she got to play here all four years. That's been a really cool thing, too, is that shows how good she is. . . . Bridget, she's a grinding machine, and she played so well at regionals both years to get us here. Everything she does, she does it to the best of her ability, which is a very admirable trait."
Tee times have not been released for Monday's fourth round. Live scoring is available at NCAA Championship.
