What a difference a year makes.
After not even making it to the championship game in last year's Getterman Classic, Baylor swept through this year's tournament undefeated and finished off the weekend with an 8-3 win over Prairie View A&M in Sunday's championship game at Getterman Stadium.
"It was nice to get the title back here and take control of things," said Baylor coach Glenn Moore, whose team improved to 8-2 for the year with its sixth-straight win. "It wasn't always pretty this weekend, but we certainly did what we had to do when we had to do it. We got to see a lot of players . . . and we came out of it somewhat healthy."
Even Sunday's championship game was far from perfect.
Gia Rodoni (4-1), who struck out 16 the day before in a 2-1, eight-inning win over Western Illinois, had a two-hit shutout with six K's and a 5-0 lead through the first four innings. But, an error on a routine grounder to short led to a three-run fifth that included a passed ball, a hit batter and two hits by the Panthers (3-7).
When pinch-hitter Kaila Lee delivered a two-run double to left, Moore brought in Sidney Holman-Mansell out of the pen. The junior right-hander closed it out, allowing just one baserunner over the last 2 1/3 innings.
"I think we could have stayed with her, but we wanted to get some work out of Sidney," Moore said. "That's nothing about (Rodoni). All the confidence in the world that she would have pitched us out of that if we'd left her in there. But no need. We have to build confidence in our bullpen. Sid came in and did an exceptional job against a team that's been hitting the ball very well this weekend."
After struggling to score runs in Saturday's games against Western Illinois and Grand Canyon (4-2), the Lady Bears plated three in the first inning off Prairie View starter Crystal Castillo (1-3), who gave up five runs (two earned) on seven hits, one walk and one hit batter in 3.0 innings.
Baylor loaded the bases with infield singles by Kyla Walker and Maddison Kettler and a throwing error on Josie Bower's sacrifice bunt. Goose McGlaun drove in one run with a sacrifice fly to center, Kettler scored on a Taylor Ellis groundout and freshman Emily Hott plated the third run with a two-out RBI single to short.
"(The three-run first) showed that we came here to play," said Hott, who had a two-hit day to earn all-tournament honors along with Rodoni, Walker, Bower, Lou Gilbert and Nicky Dawson. "Instead of sitting around and letting them hang around, we were ready to get out and get the lead."
The Lady Bears padded the lead with a run in the third on a two-out RBI single by Gilbert and made it 5-0 in the fourth when Alyssa Avalos led off with a single and eventually scored on an error when the centerfielder overthrew third base.
"We've got an extreme amount of talent up and down the lineup, 1 through 9," said Gilbert, who went 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and one run scored out of the No. 7 spot in the order. "There's not a gap in our lineup like you see with some teams. We've got hitters all through it, and they're just an extreme threat every time we are up to bat."
Baylor threatened in the bottom of the fifth, trying to answer Prairie View's 3-spot, but Hannah Smith flied out to center and Kettler grounded out to shortstop with a runner in scoring position.
"I handicapped them a little bit, moving people around and putting people in and out," Moore said. "Rally killer is what they call me. We get a kid going, and I sub for them. But right now is when you need to find out when you can do what, and you won't have those options later on."
The Lady Bears tacked on three insurance runs in the sixth on three-consecutive two-out hits by Hott, Gilbert and Casey Shell. Mansell worked a perfect 1-2-3 seventh with two strikeouts to close it out.
Baylor, which won six games in four days, will have another busy week with a midweek game against UT-Arlington on Wednesday and next weekend's Baylor Invitational. The field for the Baylor Invitational includes 14th-ranked Minnesota, a 2019 World Series qualifier, a pair of NCAA regional teams in Tulsa and Illinois and a Texas State team that is 7-2 with wins over Louisville and South Alabama.

Two innings later with runners on first and second with two outs, Lou Gilbert singled to right field to score Taylor Ellis and put Baylor up by four. The following frame, Alyssa Avalos led things off with a single to right field. She later scored off a throwing error by the center fielder.

Glenn Moore on the win…
"It was nice to get the title back here and take control of things. It wasn't always pretty this weekend, but we certainly did what we had to do when we had to do it. We got to see a lot of players and that was good, and we came out of it somewhat healthy. Where we were last year, injuries are always a factor. I'm pretty happy with that."

"It's definitely raised our confidence level. We know we can be really good, but we know not to get too high or too low off of what we do."
Emily Hott on making the All-Tournament team…
"It's awesome, especially to play with them. A lot of these girls I looked up to, seeing them play in the Women's College World Series. It was great to stand by them and have such a supportive team."
