Bears use four singles wins to upend Fighting Illini in Champaign
THE RUNDOWN
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – No. 21 Baylor men's tennis (11-3) overcame a 2-0 deficit and came home with a 4-3 victory over No. 45 Illinois (3-7) on Saturday at the Atkins Tennis Center in Champaign, Ill.
The Bears dropped only their second doubles point of the season. Alex Brown and Aleks Kovacevic upset ninth-ranked Constantin Frantzen and Sven Lah, 6-2, for the duo's first loss of the season.
Sophomore Finn Bass and freshman Sebastian Nothhaft used a 6-4 victory to knot things up, but an Illinois tiebreaker win, 7-6(6), on court two clinched the doubles point.
The Bears fell behind 2-0 after No. 52 Siphosothando Montsi defeated freshman Alex Garcia, 6-0, 6-1, on court three. Then, the Bears rolled off four straight points to clinch the road win.
Bass got the Bears on the board with the 6-0, 6-4 triumph over Lucas Horve on court five. Then, No. 122 Adrian Boitan captured the highest-ranked win of his singles career with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over No. 9 Alex Brown at the No. 2 spot.
Nothhaft made it a 3-2 lead after he registered a 6-4, 7-6(0) win against Vuk Budic on court six. Then, No. 93 Frantzen clinched his first match of the season with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 victory at the No. 4 spot.
Playing the final match out, No. 30 Sven Lah dropped his first match of the spring season with a 6-7(6), 7-6(4), 10-3 defeat to No. 85 Aleks Kovacevic at the top of the lineup.
