SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Bears dropped game one of the series at Cal Poly in extra-inning fashion, 2-1 in 11 innings on Friday evening at Baggett Stadium.
The Bears (8-5) held a 1-0 lead from the fourth inning into the ninth inning, but were unable to hold on, as the Mustangs (5-9) tied things up with a run in the ninth and walked off in the 11thto take game one, 2-1.
The Bears struck first, with three-straight two-out singles in the top of the fourth inning, as a single from Tre Richardson brought home Kyle Nevin from second to put the Bears up, 1-0.
That score held up through the next four frames, as BU starter Paul Dickens and then reliever Logan Freeman put up zeroes.
Dickens had his best start of the year, tying his career-best mark of 7.0 scoreless innings, scattering four hits, walking just one and striking out a season-best nine batters.
Dickens gave way to reliever Logan Freeman in the eighth, who put up another zero and the Bears held the 1-0 lead into the ninth.
In the ninth inning, closer Luke Boyd entered and after allowing a leadoff single to Myles Emmerson, Taison Corio was hit by the pitch and the Mustangs had two on with nobody out. Boyd bared down and got Tate Samuelson to fly out to center and struck out pinch hitter Brooks Lee on three pitches. However, with the game-tying run at third, Nick Marinconz doubled down the left field line to tie the game up, 1-1.
Boyd got a strikeout to end the ninth and put up a zero in the 10thto keep the game deadlocked, 1-1.
Mustang reliever Bryan Woo was outstanding, keeping the Bears off-balance, tossing five scoreless innings, scattering three BU hits and striking out five with no walks down the stretch.
In the 11thinning, BU reliever Ryan Leckich entered in relief of Boyd. After a leadoff hit, Leckich got the out on a sac bunt, but walked the next two batters to load the bases. Leckich induced weak contact back to the mound and he threw home to get the force and the second out. However, a single by Cole Cabrera, his second hit of the day, broke the deadlock, making it a 2-1 victory for the Mustangs.
Leckich took the loss to fall to 1-1 on the year, while Mustang reliever Woo took the win and is now 1-3.
The Bears were led at the plate by Jared McKenzie, Chase Wehsener and Davion Downey, who each had two hits on the day.
NOTES
STAT OF THE DAY
7.0 – Senior LHP Paul Dickens tossed seven scoreless innings, tying his career high mark of innings pitched in a start. He previously tossed seven against this same Cal Poly club in 2019.
QUOTES OF THE DAY FROM HEAD COACH STEVE RODRIGUEZ
On the team's performance…
"It was a great ballgame. We had [Luke] Boyd in there when we wanted him, we just couldn't finish things off. Early on, we just couldn't execute when we had runners on. We made a lot of lineouts, couldn't get that two-out hit. We didn't execute down the stretch and then in the latter part of the game we gave up too many walks that came around to hurt us."
On Paul Dickens' start…
"That is probably the best I have seen him. He just got ahead of hitters, pitched in and out and he dropped his curve ball in there. It was unfortunate we couldn't get him the win."
WHAT'S NEXT
The Bears will look to even things up as game two two of the series at Cal Poly is set for 6 p.m. CT on Saturday at Baggett Stadium.
