SUN. SAND ... AND HOOPS
• No. 6 Baylor heads to Mexico to take part in the Cancun Challenge at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya. All three of BU's games will be televised on FloHoops.
• Baylor will face Fordham on Thursday, Arizona State on Friday and Houston on Saturday. The Bears have only played Fordham once - in a tournament in Anchorage, Alaska, in 1988.
• Since 1995, the Bears have played in 12 tournaments outside the continental US. Baylor has played in Hawaii three times, Puerto Rico once, Mexico once, the Bahamas four times and the US Virgin Islands twice. In those tournaments, BU is a combined 22-4.
• For the first time since 2005, Baylor is heading back to Mexico. Sixteen years ago, the Bears played in the Caribbean Classic in Riviera Maya. While there, BU topped California and Marshall.
TOP-10 SHOWDOWN
• No. 6 Baylor had a shot to send the game to overtime in the final seconds, but the 3-pointer from the left wing barely missed to give No. 3 Maryland the 79-76 win.
• The Terps led, 76-65, with 2:45 left in the game. Jordan Lewis answered with six-straight points, and NaLyssa Smith added a bucket with 1:30 to play. Then it was Lewis again with 38 seconds remaining with a 3-pointer to cut Maryland's lead to three. Baylor's defense got the stop without fouling on the other end to set up the chance for the tie.
• Smith led the way for BU with 30 points - tying her career high - to go with 15 rebounds. It marked the third 30/15 performance of her career. Lewis was right behind her with 29 points - including three triples. Sarah Andrews played a career-best 37 minutes and dished out a career-high eight assists.
QUICK HITS
• A second-half surge propelled the Bears to a 27-point win on the road over UT Arlington for BU's second game in three days to open the season. Baylor led the Lady Mavs by six at the half before holding the home team to a total of 22 points in the second half. NaLyssa Smith became the first Big 12 player to record a 20/10 performance that game, while Ja'Mee Asberry hit five triples. Caitlin Bickle had an all-around game for Baylor as she finished with seven points, eight rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a couple of charges.
• BU opened the Nicki Collen era with a win over Texas State.
• Baylor has been toward the bottom of the Big 12 in 3-point shooting in years past. That won't be the case this season. Keep track of BU's program records for 3-pointers made (210, 2016-17) and attempted (596, 2013-14).
• Jordan Lewis, Smith and Queen Egbo each received national accolades before the start of the season. Lewis, a graduate transfer from Alabama, was named to the Nancy Lieberman Award Preseason Watch List and the Wooden Award Top 50. She was also named the Big 12's Preseason Newcomer of the Year. Smith, named the Big 12's Preseason Player of the Year, was named to the Katrina McClain Award Watch List, the "Wade Watch" list, the Wooden Award Top 50 and the Naismith Preseason Watch List. Egbo, a Preseason All-Big 12 member, was named to the Lisa Leslie Award Watch List, the Wooden Award Top 50 and the Naismith Preseason Watch List.
• Nearly half the roster makes their Baylor debut this season in three transfers - Lewis (Alabama graduate transfer), Asberry (Oklahoma State transfer), Kamaria McDaniel (Penn State transfer) - and two freshmen - Kendra Gillispie and Andrea Katramados.
