Something about the NCAA Tournament just brings out the best in Marieke van der Mark.
When fifth-seeded Baylor volleyball (21-5) needed it the most, van der Mark brought the Bears some much-needed energy and then sparked a dominant second set in beating the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders, 25-22, 25-12, 26-24, Thursday night in a first-round match at the Ferrell Center.
"I thought Marieke did a good job of coming in and bringing energy," said Baylor coach Ryan McGuyre, whose team has won eight in a row going into Friday's second-round matchup against Washington State (20-11). "She knows one way to play. That's been part of her personality since Day One. I can always count on her to bring energy."
Overcoming a slow start, Avery Skinner recorded her team-high 11th double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs, while Yossiana Pressley and Lauren Harrison had 16 and 11 kills, respectively. Kyndal Payne led A&M-CC with 12 kills, nine digs, two blocks and one service ace.
"It's pretty discouraging, honestly," McGuyre said of the way the Bears came out in the first set. "In life, we always say, 'What were we thinking?' and move on. We'll need to pause and be like, 'OK, answer the question. What were we thinking?' We play like that (against Washington State), and our season will be over, because that's a good team we're playing."
Struggling to get anything going, Baylor trailed 21-19 in the first set when the Islanders (19-10) reeled off four-straight points in a run that included kills by Payne and Kayla White and a pair of attack errors by the Bears.
Subbed in late in the set, van der Mark had a kill that started a 6-1 closing run in taking the first set. After staying clean through most of the set, the Islanders had a ball-handling error by setter Faith Panhans and back-to-back attack errors by Leah Stolfus and Payne that put BU up 1-0.
Libero Shanel Bramschreiber, who had a match-high 17 digs, "was really the first general to bring the energy back to us," McGuyre said.
"We had some other athletes playing flat. I think (Bramschreiber) got the energy going and really helped us get to the level we needed to be at," McGuyre said. "That was something she did all year for us during the COVID year, where it seemed like it was needed every day. So, that part of it was huge. She was the MVP for me, keeping us dialed in for this match."
Scoring four-straight points for the Bears, van der Mark had four kills on four swings early in a second set that turned with an 8-0 run. Skinner had two kills and an ace in a pivotal stretch that also included three attack errors by the Islanders.
"I was definitely feeding her," setter Hannah Sedwick said of van der Mark. "We just want to repeat what is working. It's just great to have someone like Marieke step up in a game like this and find the floor when it matters. All the time, hitting the ball hard, taking big swings and being aggressive, being the player that she knows she is. I just love being on the court with her."
Hitting .343 with 14 kills and only two errors, A&M-CC led for most of the third set and got to set point at 24-23 when Pressley had an attack error into the net. After a Baylor timeout, the Bears closed out the match in straight sets with back-to-back-to-back kills by van der Mark, Skinner and Preslie Anderson.
"I think I told Hannah five times to set me the ball. I would have been mad if she hadn't because I knew I would be able to put it down," van der Mark said of her set-saving kill. "I trust my teammates, and I trust that they would be able to as well. It was a little selfish at that moment, but I love that I got the set and I had the trust from my teammates to put it down."
With a spot in next week's region semifinals, most likely at fourth-seeded Wisconsin, Baylor will face Washington State in Friday's 7 p.m. second-round match at the Ferrell Center. The Cougars got 11 kills and three blocks from redshirt junior middle blocker Kalyah Williams in sweeping Northern Colorado, 25-17, 25-15, 25-20.
"You look at our offense, we hit (.429, .432 the last two sets), but we weren't stopping balls, either," McGuyre said. "That's something where we're much, much better and more capable of doing. To me, defense is a grit, defense is an alertness, defense is attitude. So, we've got to be able to bring that attitude (Friday), because both teams are going to hit balls back and forth.
"We're skilled enough, gifted enough, that we're still going to get some swings over the course of the match. But, at some point, we either have to hope they make errors or we've got to make stops."
Friday's 7 p.m. match at the Ferrell Center will be streamed by ESPN+, with Lincoln Rose and Adam Johnson calling the action.
WACO, Texas – No. 5 seed Baylor volleyball defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the First Round of the NCAA Volleyball Tournament on Thursday night in the Ferrell Center, sweeping them 3-0.
BU (21-5) battled with the Islanders (19-10) throughout the three sets, but defeated them 25-22, 24-12, 26-24 to advance.
Yossiana Pressley was the standout for the Bears along with Avery Skinner and Lauren Harrison, all three recording double-digit kills. Skinner had her ninth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 14 digs overall.
Marieke van der Mark provided the spark of energy for the Bears when it was waning in the first set. The second set saw BU ramp up the energy and precision en route to the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE
The Islanders applied pressure early on, keeping up with the pace of the Bears. Baylor came out lacking their usual spark and it took a minute to get there. TAMU-CC was able to block Yossiana Pressley and Avery Skinner while finding the holes on the court for their own kills. After plenty of back-and-forth to start it off, BU caught its stride around the 10th point with a service ace from Skinner. A&M Corpus Christi brought itself within two points at 12-10, but Baylor pushed and scored two more. The Islanders scored out of a media timeout, but the Bears kept rolling on. TAMU-CC tied it up at 19-19 and McGuyre called for a timeout. Marieke van der Mark was brought in and got a kill after two points passed, followed by one from Sedwick to make it 21-21 and TAMU-CC called timeout. They'd take another when it was 24-22 after Lauren Harrison scored and errors from the Islanders. Another attack error ended the set at 25-22.
SET TWO
After the Islanders made it another close set at the beginning, BU bounced back and showed them it'd go no further. They traded points until BU scored its 10th of the set. Up 14-11, the Bears challenged a call and it was reversed in their favor to make it 15-11 and then went into a media timeout. Baylor went on an 8-0 run starting at 14-11, the last point an Avery Skinner service ace at 21-11. The set finished with a 17-3 run from the Bears to take set two at 25-12. Skinner was monstrous throughout the set, and van der Mark was the added x-factor to make things happen.
SET THREE
An Avery Skinner kill started the third set, then Yossiana Pressley made her move. TAMU-CC took the lead at 3-2, and held the lead or tied until it was 16-16. The Bears had to play catch-up and bounce back. Back-to-back Pressley kills led to the 16-all tie, and Skinner tipped the scales for BU to have a lead. The Islanders tied it back up at 18-18, but the Bears pushed on. Preslie Anderson was instrumental, getting a kill at 19-18. At 20-18, A&M called timeout. They'd call timeout again at 22-20 after two points from Lauren Harrison. But the Islanders weren't done yet. They pushed it to 23-all, and after an attack error from Baylor, McGuyre called timeout. Out of the break, van der Mark recorded a kill, then Skinner, then Anderson finished off the set and match at 26-24.
Baylor will take on Washington State for the Second Round matchup, who defeated Northern Colorado 3-0 earlier in the day on Thursday.
Start time is set for 7 p.m. between the Bears and Cougars on Friday, Dec. 3.
Lincoln Rose and Adam Johnson will be on the call for Friday night's match on ESPN+.
