Bears to host doubleheader, compete in ITA Kick-Off Weekend Championship
WACO, Texas – No. 4 Baylor men's tennis (6-1) will play three matches this weekend - a doubleheader at home on Friday against Oklahoma (4-3) and UT Tyler (0-2) and the ITA Kick-Off Weekend championship match vs No. 9 Texas A&M (2-0) on Sunday in Dallas.
First, the Bears will host a doubleheader in Waco at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center against the Sooners and Patriots at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. CT, respectively. The BU-OU contest is a non-conference match and will not count towards the Big 12 standings.
Then, Baylor and A&M will square off at 3 p.m. Sunday in Dallas on the campus of SMU with a trip to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship on the line. The match was previously scheduled for Jan. 24, but was postponed due to the shutdown on the University of Michigan's campus.
BU is 19-0 all-time in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, having advanced to the national event in each of their last nine appearances.
The Bears moved up two spots to No. 4 in the latest Oracle/ITA team rankings and will face their fourth top-10 ranked opponent of 2021 when they meet the Aggies on Sunday. BU is currently 2-1 against such foes. The last time the Bears defeated three top-10 ranked teams in the same season was 2019.
BU holds a combined 30-5 record in singles action this spring and a 16-4 mark in doubles, highlighted by Charlie Broom/Matias Soto's 5-0 record in dual matches. The Bears have won the doubles point in six of their seven matches, and are 5-1 when doing so.
Oklahoma leads the all-time series over Baylor 26-22. The two sides have split the last four meetings 2-2.
UT Tyler also holds a 3-1 advantage over BU. This will be the first time in 31 years that the Bears and Patriots face off.
Texas A&M holds a 35-22-1 lead over Baylor, but the Bears have won four of the last six contests.
