Butler, Flagler, Moffatt and Paterson earn first-team recognition
IRVING, Texas – For the second consecutive season, Baylor men's basketball broke a school-record with six athletes named to the Academic All-Big 12 teams, as announced Tuesday by the conference office.
Jared Butler, Adam Flagler, Jackson Moffatt and Mark Paterson combined to give BU four first-team Academic All-Big 12 selections for the first time in program history, while MaCio Teague and Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua earned second-team recognition, helping the Bears break the school record of five honorees set last season.
Butler earned his third career Big 12 academic honor after being named to the 2019 Rookie Team, 2020 Academic All-Big 12 Second Team and the 2021 Academic All-Big 12 First Team. He's the first player in program history named to all three teams during his career.
Moffatt is now a two-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team honoree, earning the honor in each of the last two seasons. He's the sixth player in program history to earn First-Team honors in consecutive seasons, joining Mark Shepherd, Josh Lomers, Brady Heslip, Jake Lindsey and Freddie Gillespie.
Teague earned his second-straight Academic All-Big 12 Second Team honor, while Flagler, Paterson and Tchamwa Tchatchoua were recognized for the first time.
The Bears have now had multiple First Team honorees in four consecutive seasons and seven times in the league's 25-year history. Lomers and Shepherd were recognized in 2008, Heslip and Jacob Neubert in 2013, Heslip and Logan Lowery in 2014, Lindsey and Jonathan Davis in 2018, Lindsey and Gillespie in 2019 and Gillespie and Moffatt in 2020.
All told, Baylor has now had 25 first-team honors earned by 17 different players, along with 17 second-team selections by 13 different players.
A total of 59 student-athletes were recognized by the conference, with 4 First Team honorees and 16 Second Team selections. First Team members have maintained 3.20 or better GPAs3, and Second Team honorees hold 3.00 to 3.19 GPAs. To qualify, student-athletes must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests, while freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Seniors who meet all other criteria are not subject to the participation requirement.
Baylor, which earned the first No. 1 NCAA Tournament seed in program history, won its first two games to advance to the Sweet 16 for the fifth time in the last 11 tournaments. The Bears face No. 5 seed Villanova at 4:15 p.m. CT Saturday on CBS from Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind.
