Bears outrebound on the glass but fall on the road
CINCINNATI, Ohio – In its first of two road swing games, Baylor men's basketball couldn't find its momentum at Fifth Third Arena on Wednesday night, falling to Cincinnati 67-57.
Despite outrebounding on the glass in both offensive and defensive boards, Baylor (11-9, 1-7) couldn't hold off Cincinnati's (11-10, 3-5) offensive efforts led by Baba Miller, who accounted for 18 points on 17 rebounds.
As a team, BU shot 35-percent from the field and outscored the Bearcats 34-24 in the paint, with Tounde Yessoufou leading in points with 16 along with seven rebounds. Obi Agbim cashed in 14 points with the help of four of Baylor's six made threes on the night. Dan Skillings Jr., a former Bearcat from 2022-25, put up 10 points on seven rebounds and a season-high of two steals.
UC's Jizzle James broke out of his conference slump, sinking five buckets from behind the line to end the night with 17 points to attribute to UC's third conference win and Baylor's fourth consecutive loss.
Baylor heads to Morgantown next to face West Virginia on Saturday at 3 p.m. CT on ESPN2.
THE RUNDOWN
Making his return to his former school, Skillings Jr. entered the lineup to get the night going in the Queen City. Both teams started in a drought in scoring, but starting center Caden Powell put the first points on the board for the Bears. Coming out of the media timeout trailing 7-3, Skillings sank a reverse layup under the basket to drown out a crowd of boos.
The Bearcats found some rhythm, going an 8-0 run while holding the Bears to a scoring drought for up to four minutes to extend their early lead, 15-5.
Two swift baskets by Isaac Williams IV and Yessoufou cut the deficit and got BU on an 10-0 roll to put the Bears back in the game. However, Cincinnati was just as quick to respond with a 7-0 run of its own to go up 22-15 at the under-eight media timeout.
James Nnaji made his return to the court picking up a rebound out of the final media timeout of the first half. Obi Agbim guided the Bears into the half with three made baskets from behind the arc with BU trailing, 35-28.
Coming out of the half, Skillings was the first to attack with a fast jumper assisted by Agbim. Cincinnati answered with a 7-0 run to give its biggest lead of the night of 12, up 42-30.
Agbim and Yessoufou reached double-digits in the second half with Skillings not far behind at the under-12 media, the Bears trailing 54-41.
A flagrant foul called on Skillings on his former team gave the Bearcats a five-point swing, extending 63-46.
A steal turned into a slam dunk for Skillings gave him his 10th point of the night as the third Bear in double-figures. The Baylor defense forced Cincinnati to a scoring drought of no made field goals for over six minutes, but it wasn't enough for the Bears to get the win on the road, falling 67-57.
