Coming off an exhilarating 2-2 draw against the undefeated Oregon Ducks, Baylor soccer (3-2-2) welcomes the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (2-4-1) at 7 p.m. Thursday in the second of three-straight home games at Betty Lou Mays Field.
Sophomore Chloe Japic said the Bears "kept the theme throughout the game that it's not over until it's over" to come back from a 2-0 deficit in the final nine minutes of regulation Sunday night against the Ducks.
After receiving back-to-back yellow cards, Oregon forward Lexi Romero was ejected, forcing the Ducks were down a player for the remainder of the game. Taking advantage of that, Baylor scored the equalizing goals on shots by Mackenzie Anthony and Japic, respectively, with the last one coming with just one second left on the clock.
Fifth-year senior Jennifer Wandt had six saves, including a big one in the second overtime, to earn Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Week honors for the second time this season and the seventh overall award in her career.
"I think people probably get tired of me saying it, but that is a great goalkeeper and a great defensive team," Baylor head coach Paul Jobson said. "You hope you don't have to use her a lot, but she has to be ready for when her time comes. And time after time, she is ready for those occasions and makes the big save to keep us in a game."
After playing four of their first six games on the road, the Bears are thrilled to be home for a three-game stretch that will include Sunday's 12 p.m. game against San Francisco (3-2-1).
"It's just so much more exciting (to be home)," said Anthony, who has scored a team-high four goals. "On the road, a game's a game, but there's just something about sleeping in your own bed and being on your home field that is just more comforting."
In the last two pre-conference tune-ups, Jobson said he wants to see the team get off to better starts.
"We started at the beginning of the year talking about, 'Hey, we're a better team at the end of every game, but we're inconsistent at the beginning,''' Jobson said. "We thought we had resolved that, and it reared its ugly head again on Sunday . . . us not really starting the way we need to and allowing the other team to set the tone for us. Then, we found ourselves fighting back for the rest of the game.
"Those are the things we have to adjust. We've got to find ways to be better consistently at the beginning of the game."
SFA is coming off a 2-0 win over Prairie View A&M on Sunday after being shut out by North Texas, 3-0, two days earlier. Players to watch for the Lumberjacks include senior defender Carli Arthurs, freshman midfielder Jamye Bailey and senior goalkeeper Madeline Talbot, who all played vital roles in the win over Prairie View.
San Francisco, which also had a 2-2 tie with Oregon as one of its three games against Pac-12 teams, is coming off a 3-0 win against Portland State. Jobson said the Dons are a "team on the rise."
"They're a team that hasn't had a ton of success over the years, but this year is showing some great success and turning things around a little bit," he said. "Again, very well-coached and good players. That's what we wanted out of our schedule this year. We wanted to be as prepared for the Big 12 as possible, and these two teams are going to help us do that leading into next week."
Following the three-game home stand, Baylor will open Big 12 play with back-to-back road games, facing Oklahoma State (3-3-1) at 7 p.m. next Thursday, Sept. 23, in Stillwater, Okla., and fifth-ranked TCU (7-0-0) at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, in Fort Worth.
