Kooiman, Anthony, and Japic Combine for Three Goals in Bears' Win
By Jerry Hill
Baylor Bear Insider
For the second-straight game, Baylor sophomores Mackenzie Anthony and Chloe Japic scored goals Thursday night at Betty Lou Mays Field. Only this time, they didn't wait until the last nine minutes of regulation.
Anthony headed in a ball off an assist from Elizabeth Kooiman to get the Bears on the board in the 19thminute, then Japic blasted one into the bottom left corner of the net a little over seven minutes later en route to a dominant 3-0 win over the visiting Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks.
"I'm excited for any of those kids that are scoring goals," said Baylor coach Paul Jobson, whose 4-2-2 team extended its unbeaten streak to five-straight games. "Especially Mack Anthony . . . that's what she was recruited to do. I know she was frustrated last year not getting into a rhythm, but she's showing maturity on the field now and creating some great opportunities for herself. And then Japic, she can play anywhere. She's a tough kid."
Already leading 2-0 at the half, Baylor added an insurance goal in the 12th minute of the second half, when Kooiman scored her first goal of the season and sixth of her career off an assist from midfielder Maddie Algya.
"I've definitely had chances and it has been frustrating, especially when other keepers have made some amazing saves," said Kooiman, who had five shots and two on goal. "It was definitely good to get that first goal in the back of the net. Hopefully, this breaks the gate a little bit."
Jobson echoed Kooiman's sentiments, saying, "Hopefully, that opens the floodgates for her."
"She's been a massive threat for us down that left wing," Jobson said. "You just knew it was a matter of time. She was going to score her first goal. But, you could tell they had scouted her. They were defending her a little differently than some of the other teams, and she still found a way to get in and score a great goal, actually."
Scoring multiple goals for the third time in the last four games, the Bears out-shot the Lumberjacks, 14-2, in the first half and 24-7 for the game.
While SFA's goalkeepers combined on eight saves, Baylor goalkeeper Jennifer Wandt only had to make two second-half saves to record her 35th career shutout.
"The team made it easy on me tonight," Wandt said. "Our defense was rock-solid, and our midfielders and forward helped a lot. We played a lot of team defense, so I didn't have to do much, but it's nice for the team to get a shutout and get a nice 3-0 win."
Taylor Moon and Kate Zimmerman both returned from injuries for the Bears, playing just 34 and 24 minutes, respectively.
"(Moon) hasn't played in a few games, so that protocol is always getting them max fit again and make sure we don't over-stress the body. But, it's great to have her back."
With Baylor scheduled to play San Francisco (3-3-1) at 12 p.m. Sunday, Jobson substituted freely and ended up getting 18 players in the game. That included Chloe Brown, Guiliana Cunningham and Madeline Bryant seeing their first game action of the season.
"It's twofold good," Jobson said of using so many players. "One, it keeps your high-minutes players with less minutes. Obviously, they're more fresh on Sunday. As we know, you can lose anybody at any time. So, it gives some of those players some minutes, gives them experience. That's the tough thing, when you're running with a lot of kids, and then at some point you have to use one of them and they don't have any experience. So, this was a good experience for those girls."
In their final conference tune-up, the Bears play a San Francisco team coming off a 1-0 loss to 24th-ranked SMU.
"San Francisco will be a good test for us right before conference," Wandt said. "And then, we go on the road to play two great opponents. I know we're just looking forward to that and just starting conference. We feel like we're hitting our stride, and we're going to be good to go for that."

TOP QUOTES
Paul Jobson on the game…
"Yeah, I thought first half we were good. I wanted to come out second half and be a little bit sharper with our passing. I thought we were giving away some pretty easy passes in some dangerous areas. I don't think we came out extremely sharp in the second half, but at the end of the day that's going to be a good team. They're going to be a big-time contender in our conference. Our team is dangerous enough to put some points on the board which we saw with some opportunities, but at the end of the day we won. I am proud of that. You have to be a team that can win games and they did that, but I think moving forward we are going to have to be a little bit sharper."
Elizabeth Kooiman on what worked tonight…
"Tonight, I would say 1v1 option was on. It was definitely good to get the first goal in the back of the net, [and] hopefully break the gates a little bit. It was just good to score."
Jennifer Wandt on the shutout...
"The team made it easy on me tonight. Our defense was rock solid, and our midfield and forwards helped a lot. We played a lot of team defense, so I didn't have to do much. It's nice for the team to get a shutout and get a nice 3-0 win."
