Bass, Grassi Mazzuchi defeat FAU pair in third set breaker
SAN DIEGO – Baylor men's tennis wrapped up the second day of play at the Barnes Tennis Center on Thursday evening. The duo of Finn Bass and Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi are advancing through to the quarterfinal round of the 2022 ITA Fall National Championships after defeating Acevedo/Krolo (FAU), 4-6, 6-1, 1-0(9).
THE RUNDOWN
Florida Atlantic's Nicolas Acevedo and Filip Krolo got a hot start in Thursday's round of 16 matchup. The pair quickly put a 5-2 lead up against Bass and Grassi Mazzuchi on court 17 before taking set one, 6-4.
Set two was all Baylor from the beginning, as Bass and Grassi Mazzuchi won five-straight games before the Owls notched their first point in the second set. It was too little, too late, as the Bears went to take set two, 6-1.
The third-set tiebreaker saw the Bears up 8-3 early before the Owls' comeback campaign that knotted the breaker at nine. Bass and Grassi Mazzuchi had no problem putting the match away, with a 11-9 final score.
Bass was knocked out of the singles bracket on Thursday after his 6-1, 6-2, loss to the No. 2 ITA preseason newcomer, Nishesh Basavareddy, in the round of 16.
WHAT'S NEXT
No. 14 Finn Bass and Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi square off against Penn's No. 20 Edoardo Graziani and Kevin Zhu, fresh off their upset of the first-seeded team from Texas.
The second group of Bears get their start at SMU's Ralston/Neufeld Coaches Challenge on Friday morning. Doubles begin at 10 a.m. and will be followed by one round of singles and another round of doubles.
