
MT’s Bass, Grassi Mazzuchi Advance to Fall National Semifinals

WACO, Texas – Baylor men's tennis split up on Friday to compete at the 2022 ITA Fall Nationals in San Diego, Calif., and the Ralston/Neufeld Coaches Challenge at SMU in Dallas. In California, the doubles paring of Finn Bass and Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi defeated Edoardo Graziani and Kevin Zhu from Penn, 6-4, 1-6, 1-0(5) to advance to the semifinal round.
THE RUNDOWN
ITA Fall Nationals
The first set from San Diego was knotted with both duos trading games through four-all. At that point, Bass and Grassi Mazzuchi caught their stride to complete the set with two-straight games, defeating Penn, 6-4.
Set two was dominated by the Quakers, as they jumped out to an early 3-1 lead and never looked back, taking the second set, 6-1.
In their third match of the tournament, Bass and Grassi Mazzuchi reached a third 10-point tie break. Unlike the previous showings, the Bears came out firing and put up a quick 10-5 score to take the breaker and the match, advancing to Saturday's semifinal round.
Ralston/Neufeld Coaches Challenge
Marko Miladinović and Christopher Frantzen paired up for two doubles matches on Friday, taking the first match 6-1 over Bracks/Richardson (Wichita State), and dropping their second, 6-4 to Jachuk/Sun from Harvard.
Justin Braverman and Ethan Muza also took the courts for doubles and went 2-0 on the day. In their first match, the pair notched a 6-2 win over Minakata/Van Herzeele from Wichita State. Their second match saw a 6-3 win over Neff/Cloud from SMU.
Braverman won the first singles match of the day for the Bears, taking his match 6-2, 6-2 over Wichita State's Richard King. Shortly after, Franzten defeated another Shocker, Zach Grueber, 6-3, 7-5.
Miladinović dropped a third-setter on Saturday afternoon, 6-4, 6-7(2), 6-4, to Adam Neff from SMU, and Harvard's Ronan Jachuk beat Muza, 6-2, 6-1.
WHAT'S NEXT
5-8 seed Finn Bass and Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi will take the courts at 1:30 p.m. CT on Saturday to face No. 4 seed Andrew Lutschaunig and JJ Tracy in the ITA Fall National Semifinals.
The contingent at SMU will get their start at 10 a.m. with one round of doubles, followed by two rounds of singles.
