Adrian Boitan and Tadeas Paroulek bested Francois Musitelli/Yasha Zemel, 6-4, on court three to clinch the doubles point for the Bears. No. 12-ranked Finn Bass and Sven Lah went unfinished on court one, 5-4, over Gabriel Diallo/Millen Hurrion.
In singles, No. 123 Lah fell to Francois Musitelli, 6-2, 6-1 on court three and Matias Soto fell 6-1, 6-4 to No. 5 Diallo on court two early. Boitan won 6-4, 6-3 on court one over Hurrion to tie it up at 2-2 overall. Then it was Bass on court five, coming out victorious over Mercer at 7-6(5), 6-1 to put the Bears just ahead at 3-2.
Kentucky tied it up again at 3-3 when Marko Miladinović fell 6-2, 7-6(3) to Lapadat. It was Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi on court six who sealed the deal for Baylor, winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 over Zemel.
Grassi Mazzuchi improved to 11-0, Boitan to 9-0, Bass to 10-1 in dual play with their wins. Doubles pair Grassi Mazzuchi/Soto are now 10-0 in doubles, Boitan/Paroulek at 7-1, while Bass/Lah remain 6-2.
THE VOLUNTEERS
Tennessee bested No. 13 South Carolina on Saturday, 4-2, to improve to 10-1 overall on the season and to advance to the quarterfinals. They swept No. 12 Texas A&M, 4-0, on Friday to start off the tournament.
QUOTABLE – Head Coach Michael Woodson
"I thought we came out with fantastic energy and played with great discipline in the doubles. I thought we responded well from yesterday to today in some things we wanted to work on. We were able to execute and did a great job at all three positions to grab hold of the match. It was fun to see and exciting to get up 1-0. To Kentucky's credit, they fight really hard and they're feisty, well coached, and they responded in the singles. They were more aggressive than we were and got on our heels a bit. When our backs were against the wall we responded in a lot of positions. Heck of an effort for Finn and Adrian to keep battling, and Juampi turned his match very sharply from the first set to the second and he was able to keep that momentum. To see the guys fighting together – these are the types of matches that we really need if we're going to have success as the season goes on."
QUOTABLE – Junior Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi
"I think we played much better in the doubles point today. We started and finished strong on all three courts. Then in singles, we struggled at the beginning but credit to Kentucky because they were going after it more than we did. I had a slow start, got broken twice on deuce points and lost the first set. Fortunately, I could make a few adjustments and early in the second set I felt the momentum change. I'm happy to get the win and clinch the match. But at the end of the day, we are playing a tournament, and we have to focus on Tennessee tomorrow."
