MGOLF’s Keefer Tied for 5th after Round One of Norman Regional

NORMAN, Okla. – Baylor men's golfer Johnny Keefer shot a 3-under 69 to finish tied for fifth after round one of the NCAA Norman Regional Monday at Jimmie Austin Golf Club.
Johnny's 69 was his 10th round in the 60's and his 17th round of par or better this season, earning him the highest finish among the 10 individuals in the field, besting Louisiana Tech's Sam Murphy by two shots.
Following a pair of pars to open the round, Keefer caught fire with three-straight birdies at Nos. 3, 4 and 5 to climb into the top 10. Keefer closed his opening nine with a fourth birdie at the par-5 8th to go out with a 4-under 32.
The junior from San Antonio started with two pars on the back nine before suffering the only two blemishes on his card, with bogeys at Nos. 12 and 13. Keefer bounced back with a birdie at No. 14 and finished with four-straight pars.
Auburn's J.M. Butler and South Carolina's Gene Zeigler share the 18-hole lead after matching rounds of 6-under 66. Keefer tied for the second-highest Big 12 representative behind only Texas' Travis Vick, who shot a 5-under 67 on Monday. The highest-finishing individual not on an advancing team will punch their ticket to the NCAA Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club, in Scottsdale, Ariz.
