BU’s Britta Snyder holds a two-shot lead after opening-round 69
STILLWATER, Okla. – Baylor women's golf got off to a good start in the first round of the Stillwater Regional on Monday with a 4-over 292 to lead Clemson by a shot.
On a day where the stroke average soared north of 78, Baylor's Britta Snyder fired an opening-round 69, the only sub-70 round of the day, to take a two-shot lead. The sophomore carded a bogey at the par-4 5th, but jumpstarted her round with an eagle at the par-5 9th. From that point, Snyder made four birdies on the back nine, punctuated with a birdie at the par-5 18th. Monday marked Snyder's first round in the 60's since a second-round 68 at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational last October.
Rosie Belsham continued her strong play with an even-par 72, one of just seven rounds at par or better Monday. The sophomore started with a birdie at No. 2 and a bogey at No. 4, but got into red figures at the turn with a birdie at the par-5 9th. Sitting at 2-under for the round through 15 holes, Belsham had back-to-back double bogeys at Nos. 16 and 17, which were two of the three hardest holes in round one, to fall back to 2-over. She finished strong with an eagle at 18 to get back to even par and in a tie for fifth.
In her final NCAA regional, Gurleen Kaur shot a 3-over 75 in round one to finish in a tie for 15th. After an opening double bogey, Kaur bogeyed four of the next five holes to drop to 5-over on the day. She made the first of seven-straight pars at No. 7 before back-to-back birdies at Nos. 14 and 15. Following a double bogey at No. 17, she bounced back with a long eagle putt at the last for a 2-under 34 on the back nine.
Addie Baggarly finished a shot back of Kaur in a tie for 21st after an opening-round 76, beating the field average by over two shots. Baggarly made a field-leading 14 pars, with her only blemishes coming in the form of bogeys at Nos. 3, 5, 10 and 18.
Hannah Karg shot an 8-over 80 with a pair of 4-over 44s on each nine to finish tied for 39th.
HIGHLIGHTS
QUOTE OF THE DAY
Head coach Jay Goble: "This is a great golf course to have a regional championship, because you have to fight so hard out here every day, and it prepares you for what you're going to see at Nationals. The fact that we had some stumbles coming in but then made two eagles and a birdie on the last hole shows our perseverance. This is going to be a fight until the end of Wednesday. I mean, that's just the way regionals are, and we're going to go through our process the same way we always do. We're going to reflect on the round, go out and work on stuff we need to do to get better for tomorrow. Everybody's going to take a lot of punches out here, especially in a 25-mile-per-hour wind. You have to put your head down, get back to work, go out there, and hit every shot as best you can."
