No. 20 VB Falls in Austin, 3-0

Bears succumb to No. 5 Texas in three sets

Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – The 20th-ranked Baylor volleyball squad fell in three sets to No. 5 Texas on Friday night at Gregory Gym, 3-0.
 
BU (12-9, 6-5 Big 12) kept it close with the Longhorns (16-3, 11-0 Big 12) in the first set but came up short in the following two, 27-25, 25-19, 25-15.
 
The Bears were led by Elise McGhee for the second-straight match, bringining in 11 kills. Averi Carlson had her 50thcareer ace in the first set and dished out 22 assists. She and Lauren Briseño each had eight digs. Manuela Bibinbe led the squad on defense with five blocks while Allie Sczech had four.
 
Baylor is now 16-2 on the second day in back-to-back matches against the same opponent, both losses coming against the Longhorns.
 
THE RUNDOWN
Set 1
The Longhorns got out hot to begin the set, but Baylor pushed forward and got all the way to set point, where Texas worked their way to meet them and finished the set on a 6-1 run. UT got out with a 4-0 start including an ace before Alicia Andrew got the first Baylor kill. The Bears ccaught up thanks to attack and service errors, tying it at 7-7 with a Bibinbe kill. It was Bibinbe, Elise and a Longhorn attack error that put the Bears ahead, 11-8. Bibinbe kept swinging and got a kill, then Andrew, and then Bibinbe served her third ace of the weekend, prompting Texas to call timeout at 14-10. Baylor saw one point go the Longhorns way before McGhee got a kill and then Carlson served her 50th ace of her career. Sczech made it 17-12 and UT went on a tear and after Asjia O'Neal got an ace, McGuyre called time for the Bears with a one-point lead, 19-18. Two more points went Texas' way before Simpson got a kill and UT had a failed challenge on it. Two errors by the Horns were followed by a kill from Sczech and Jerritt Elliott called timeout, Baylor now at set point, 24-20. An attack error and UT kill pushed Baylor into another pause, now 24-22. Madisen Skinner got a kill, then a block with O'Neal before another Skinner kill. Kendal Murphy entered the match and silenced the crowd, getting a block with Andrew. Now tied at 25-25, a Baylor service error and a UT block finished the set, 27-25 Texas.
 
Set 2
The second frame started with a block from Texas but was followed by a Simpson kill. A new fire lit, Simpson started producing, getting another kill at 3-2 and then a block with Bibinbe against UT's O'Neal. McGhee tied the set at five-all and went back-to-back with another kill. To blocks came against the Bears before McGhee and Sczech each got kills to tie it at eight-all. McGhee kept BU within arms reach. Simpson served an ace to tie at 14. Media timeout came and went, Jenna Wenaas getting two straight kills for UT. Bibinbe stopped the run and McGhee followed, down one point. A Wenaas kill and ace from UT prompted a timeout from BU, 19-16. McGhee got a kill, but two more kills from the Longhorns pushed another Baylor pause. Texas finished the set on a 4-1 run, McGhee serving an ace, 25-19.
 
Set 3
Simpson started the set with a kill. Sczech and Bibinbe got the second point with a block against Skinner. Three-straight points went UT's way before Bibinbe tied it at three-all. O'Neal got two kills before a service error but picked back up with a kill which Baylor had an unsuccessful challenge against. Three-straight attack errors had Baylor call time, the score 9-5. Wenaas had a kill on both sides of a McGhee kill, then another UT kill had BU in a timeout again. Errors were traded but Texas went on a five-point run before an attack error. Sczech got back-to-back kills before delivering a block with Bibinbe in a spark, the score 19-11 and Texas going into a timeout. A UT error was followed by a kill before Bibinbe had one herself, then O'Neal responded. Murphy got a kill, the score now 21-14. The damage was done and the Longhorns finished the set and match on a 3-1 run, the set score 25-15.
