Bears to play last conference away match of season
LAWRENCE, Kan. – The 23rd-ranked Baylor volleyball team faces 17th-ranked Kansas for a midweek match on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. CT in Lawrence at Horejsi Family Arena.
BU (14-11, 8-7 Big 12) is set to take on the Jayhawks (18-4, 9-3 Big 12) for the Bears' last road league match of the season.
Baylor comes into the midweek matchup after dropping the series to TCU. The then-No. 21 Bears fell to the Horned Frogs, 3-1, on Friday night, bouncing back to win the third set before falling 29-27 in the fourth. On Saturday, BU jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Frogs rallied back to claim the final three sets. Despite Baylor's 5-6 road record, a few of the Bears' biggest wins have come on the road with the sweep of Iowa State on October 1, series sweep of Cincinnati and the three-setter with Texas Tech on November 4.
Elise McGhee continues to be a powerhouse for BU, leading the team in kills for 15 matches thus far. She has raked in double-digit kills in 17 matches, four of which she's had 20 or more. The San Antonio product is currently eighth in the conference for kills per set at 3.60. Alicia Andrew and Manuela Bibinbe carry on being hot on the block, both with over 80 total blocks and averaging 0.85 or over per set. Sophomore setter Averi Carlson is second in the league for assists per set (10.40) but leads in quantity with 1,019 overall.
Kansas enters the match after splitting the weekend series with Iowa State. The Jayhawks dropped the first match on Friday in five sets but defeated the Cyclones in the five-setter on Saturday. KU has a home winning streak of 12 dating back to September 2 it is looking to keep on Wednesday. Kansas' offense currently leads the Big 12 in kills (13.78) and assists (12.79) per set, with junior setter Camryn Turner leading the league.
Last time out, the Bears swept the series against KU for 2022 with a five-set win on the road in Lawrence and a clean sweep at home in Waco. The all-time series is led by Baylor with a one-win advantage, 28-27. BU is on a five-match winning streak against Kansas and has won eight of the last 10 matchups.
