Bears rout Thunder on Saturday in Indiana, 284.200-236.045
ANGOLA, Ind. – The Baylor acrobatics and tumbling team rolled over Trine on Saturday with a 284.200 to 236.045 win in the MTI Center.
The Bears (2-0) defeated the Thunder (0-1) by 48.155 points overall to continue a 18-meet winning streak, dating back to March 27, 2021. It was TU's first meet of the season and BU's first on the road. It was the also the first A&T meet the Thunder had held in its MTI Center.
THE RUNDOWN
BU overtook TU in every event, not dropping a single heat to Trine.
Starting off the meet, Baylor's compulsory scores were all at 9.5 and above, the highest coming from Acro at 9.95. The Thunder's highest score came in Pyramid with a score of 9.55. Going into the Acro Event, the Bears led 39.00 to 31.20.
Moving into the optional portion of the meet, Baylor had a score of 9.95 in Heat 1, 9.90 in Heat 2 and 9.90 in Heat 3 of Acro to total 29.75 for the event. In heat two, the synchronized heat, the Bears added a fourth pair so four different tops and bases competed in the heat. The Thunder had 9.1 or higher scores in two of the three heats. Going into the Pyramid event, BU was up 68.75 to Trine's 55.55.
BU had its second perfect 10.0 in as many meets with Gruendler as the top and Humphrey as the main base, where they executed what Gruendler dubbed the "Tower of Terror" in 2022 for heat 1. The second and third heat scored a 9.85 and 9.95, respectively, to total 29.75 for Pyramid as a whole. The running total was updated to 98.55 for Baylor. Trine had an event total of 28.25 to have a running total of 83.80 going into halftime.
In the Toss Event, Baylor had scores of 9.60, 9.70 and 9.80, respectively, to total 29.10 for the event, a full 1.05 better than the meet against West Liberty. Trine scored an 8.70, 8.30 and 8.05, respectively, to total 25.05. Going into the fifth event, Tumbling, the Bears were up 127.65 to the Thunder's 108.85.
In the Tumbling Event, Heat 1 (Duo) saw junior Kristen McCain and freshman Alyiah Thomas compete and score an 9.55. In the Trio Heat (Heat 2), Kitchens, Catie Wilkins and Aliyah Kaloostian scored a 9.30. The Quad Pass (Heat 3) had Katie Shiffer, Gianna Cameron, Savanna Cecil and Alayja Reynolds score a 9.20. Kitchens competed the Aerial Pass (Heat 4), scoring an impressive 9.925 from the senior. McCain competed the 6 Element pass (Heat 5) scoring a 9.875. The Open pass (Heat 6) was competed by freshman Cecil, scoring a 9.90. The Bears' total came to 57.750 for the heat while TU scored a 44.075. Going into the day's final event, BU was up 185.400 on the Thunder for a 32.475-point lead.
In the Team Event, Baylor made it halfway through before an injury occurred. After completing a walk-through, the Bears competed it full out and earned a score of 98.800. Trine scored 83.12 in their Team Event, bringing the meet score to 284.200 to 236.045, BU taking the win.
