Bears score five in the first, five in the ninth to walk-off the Longhorns
Baylor Bear Insider
Just a little word of advice to Baylor baseball fans, you might not want to leave your seat until the game is actually over.
Trailing by four and facing Texas closer Zane Morehouse in the ninth, the Bears capitalized on three walks, two hit batters and three wild pitches and then walked off a stunning 10-9 win over the Longhorns on Saturday when Hunter Teplanszky drove in two with a two-out single to right.
"That's every kid's dream," said Teplanszky, who went 3-for-6 in extending his on-base streak to 23 games and hitting streak to 11-straight.
"You're in the back yard, bottom of the ninth, two outs, you've got to win a baseball game. That's the way I looked at it. This is the moment you dream of, there was really no pressure. I just took the same approach as I did all game. Get my pitch and execute."
Baylor's storm-the-field celebration was put on hold when home-plate umpire Joseph Brown initially called Caleb Bergman out at the plate. But the replay showed that Bergman's left hand touched the plate before catcher Greg Guillemette's tag, and the call was overturned.
Ballgame.
First-year head coach Mitch Thompson, sprinting down the third-base line "trying to create a little draft" for Bergman, said he was close enough to see Bergman's "hand get in there."
"I was pretty sure," he said, "but at the same time, I'm going, 'Man, I hope the camerawork was good enough so that they can overturn it.' That's a huge comeback win. Those types of wins don't happen every day. And if Baylor fans haven't figured out anything else, don't quit on this team, because they're not quitting until the last out is made."
In Friday's series opener, Baylor (13-22, 5-9) scored three runs in the eighth and six in the ninth, but came up short in an 11-9 loss. This time, they finished the comeback in dramatic fashion to knock off the league-leading Longhorns (25-12, 7-4).
"The beauty of today is there was only one team in the country that got a chance to beat the University of Texas. That was us," Thompson said. "And thankfully, we got it done."
After Texas put up a 4-spot on the board off Baylor starter Mason Marriott in the first, all the Bears did was answer with five in the bottom of the frame. UT starter Charlie Hurley, who came in with a 2.43 ERA, threw 47 pitches and didn't even make it out of the inning.
Singles by Cal Posey and Teplanszky and a walk to Kolby Branch loaded the bases. After the first run came across on a wild pitch, Hurley had back-to-back strikeouts, but then gave up a bases-loaded walk to Austin Stracener and consecutive run-scoring singles by Harrison Caley and Bergman to make it 5-4.
The Longhorns tied it in the third with a bases-loaded walk, but reliever Ethan Calder retired seven of the first eight batters he faced until running into trouble in the sixth.
Using its speed, Texas had three-straight infield singles, then took the lead on RBI singles by Peyton Powell and Porter Brown. It could have been even more, but Bergman threw out Eric Kennedy at the plate on a perfect peg from center field.
"Every time you go out there, you just say, 'I need to give my offense a chance here,''' said Calder, who pitched a personal-best 4.1 innings, giving up two runs on five hits and one walk with a career-high five strikeouts. "My only goal going in there was to keep it as close as I can and get them up swinging."
The Longhorns tacked on two more in the eighth off reliever Gabe Craig, but Cole Stasio (3-2) retired all five batters he faced to give the Bears' comeback a chance.
Baylor's ninth-inning rally started with one out when Cole Tremain singled and John Ceccoli worked a full-count walk. Morehouse walked Casen Neumann, then hit Danny Altman and Zach Mazoch to score two runs and end his day.
"Some may say they gave us that," Teplanszky said, "but I think our guys took really good at-bats that even gave us the chance to win. I think that speaks to what we're putting into every game, as a team."
Bergman reached on a fielder's choice grounder to third, scoring pinch-runner Jack Johnson. And then Posey worked a six-pitch walk before Teplanszky ripped Stuart's first-pitch delivery into right field for the walk-off hit.
"I think it speaks to what we can be as a team," Teplanszky said. "We can go out there and compete on the field with anybody you throw at us. It's a confidence booster, for sure, but it proves to us that we deserve to be on the field with those guys."
Going for their third-straight home-series win, the Bears will send senior righthander Will Rigney (3-1, 3.31 ERA) to the mound for Sunday's 1 p.m. series finale at Baylor Ballpark. The Longhorns did not name a Sunday starter coming into the series, but will likely go with either Lebarron Johnson (3-2, 3.53) or Travis Sthele (2-3, 4.91).
"We need to come out and play well, and I haven't felt like we've played well," Thompson said. "We competed, but there are little things of the game that we haven't done. So, hopefully tomorrow we can come out here and do those little things, too, and play a really clean game and just attack, attack, attack. We definitely hope to come out here tomorrow and get the series win."
WACO, Texas – In a wild second game of the series, Baylor baseball (13-22, 5-9) upset No. 12 Texas (25-12, 7-4) with a five-run comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning on Saturday at Baylor Ballpark in Waco.
Sophomore INF Hunter Teplanszky delivered the walk-off, two-run single that was overturned after review as part of a five-run inning on just two BU hits. Freshman C Zach Mazoch scored the game-tying run, then freshman OF Caleb Bergman slid in safely just before the tag to seal the win.
Freshman LHP/OF Ethan Calder gave the Bears 4.1 frames of great relief work, striking out a career-high five in bridging the game to the late innings. Junior RHP Cole Stasio got the win after recording the final five outs without allowing a baserunner.
THE RUNDOWN
Texas put up a four-spot in the top of the first inning, but Baylor responded emphatically with five runs in the bottom half, chasing the UT starter after just two-thirds of an inning. The first three batters all reached in junior INF/OF Cole Posey, Teplanszky and freshman INF Kolby Branch, then a wild pitch plated the Bears' first run.
After back-to-back strikeouts, two consecutive walks scored another run, then junior C Harrison Caley tied things with a two-run single. Bergman's RBI knock gave BU a lead after what amounted to be a 43-minute first inning.
Things were mostly quiet through the fifth, though UT picked up the tying run in the third. In the sixth, the Longhorns added a pair to go ahead 7-5, then plated another two in the top of the eighth to extend their lead to 9-5.
In the bottom of the ninth, BU's rally began with one out as junior RHP/OF Cole Tremain singled, then advanced on a wild pitch. Two more walks loaded the bases, then back-to-back hit-by-pitches chased in two runs, cutting the UT lead to 9-7.
After Bergman reached on a run-scoring fielder's choice, Posey walked to load the bases and Teplanszky came through on the first pitch he saw to single in the game-winning runs.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On today's victory…
"This game is a game that you've got to get 27 outs, it's never over until it's over. You can't run out the clock, you can't take a knee. And that's what makes it beautiful. So, big, big-time from a bunch of guys. We took walks, we took hit-by-pitches. We had two hits in that inning and scored five. They helped us, but we let them help us. And that's a big deal."
Sophomore INF Hunter Teplanszky
On his walk-off hit…
"That's every kid's dream. You sit in the backyard and dream of bottom of the ninth, two outs, you gotta win a baseball game. That's the way I kind of looked at it. The moment you dream of. There was really no pressure. I just took the same approach as I did all game, that I'm going to go get my pitch and execute it."
Freshman LHP/OF Ethan Calder
On pitching in long relief…
"I liked going out there. Every time you go out there you just say, I need to give my offense a chance here. The offense had been getting better so my only goal going in there was to keep it as close as I could and get [our offense] back up to swing."
