WACO, Texas – With freshmen leading the way on both sides, the Baylor men's and women's cross-country teams both finished 13th in the Big 12 Championships Friday morning at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course.
Running in just her fourth collegiate meet, Kenyan freshman Ruth Kimmel missed an all-conference spot (top 15) by 11 spots and 21 seconds, finishing 26th in the 6K women's race with a time of 20 minutes, 24.51 seconds.
"I'm really proud of (our performances), because I think together, we have been working so hard," Kimmel said. "I'm happy about it. The help from all the staff members has really been good for us."
A strong contingent of the Baylor community showed up at the Waco golf course to cheer on the Baylor runners.
"Obviously, because we have the home-field advantage, there's a little bit of pressure in that," said freshman Jack Sterrett from nearby Midway High School, who was the Baylor men's lead runner for the first time this season, placing 84th in the 8K race with a time of 25:06.26. "Seeing a lot of the Baylor community come out, it meant a lot. We just wanted to make sure we did good for them."
Freshman landed the top two spots for the Baylor women's team, with Ella Perry placing 90th (22:20.81). Fifth-year senior Jackie Addy was next in 95th place, followed by Jordan Ledington (109th), Rosanna Pugh (115th) and Anna Garner (123rd). The women were 13th out of 16 teams, beating TCU, Houston and Arizona.
"Because this is my best cross-country competition," Kimeli said, "I think I'm really looking forward to the next race."
On an overcast morning with a slight mist throughout the race, the top-ranked BYU women had six of the top-20 finishers and won with 41 points. Fourth-ranked West Virginia was second with 60 points, followed by No. 6 Utah (86) and Texas Tech (103).
In the men's race, with five of the top 30 teams nationally, No. 2-ranked BYU had six top-15 finishers and won the meet with 41 points, edging No. 1 Oklahoma State (52) and No. 4 Iowa State (62).
"We have the best conference in the NCAA right now, by far," Sterrett said. "So, I was really looking forward to it and just showing up, because this is what it's going to be like in the future. Starting this young team up really would help us for the future and grow faster and stronger as a team."
Wisconsin transfer Nick Hruskoci took the No. 2 spot for the Baylor men, placing 90th overall in 25:13.82. The other scoring runners for the Bears was sophomore Nolan Keenan (95th), senior Devin Duran (100th) and sophomore Aiden Ramshaw (108th).
The Baylor men and women will rest up next week before competing in the NCAA South Central Regional on Nov. 15 at the dale Watts Course in Bryan-College Station, Texas.
"This was a good tune-up for it," Sterrett said. "And that'll be it for the season if we don't (qualify for nationals). But we're looking good. I think just trusting the training, trusting each other and trusting God, we will do well."
