Jordan matches season high with three hits, Bears strike out 13 in loss
Baylor Bear Insider
WACO, Texas – Baylor freshman Mason Green did a lot of good in a four-inning start in Thursday's series opener against Cincinnati, striking out the side in the first inning and allowing just three hits.
The only problem was one of the three hits off Green (1-3) was a three-run homer by designated hitter Tommy O'Connor in the top of the third, helping the Bearcats knock off the Bears, 8-3, in the first of three games at Baylor Ballpark.
"Especially early, he was outstanding," Baylor coach Mitch Thompson said of Green, who lasted just one inning in Sunday's 11-1 loss to Texas. "(Went) four innings, gave up only three hits, but the one big one was a three-run bomb; and he struck out six. They kind of ran him out of pitches, got to the point where we needed to get him out. And then, they kept adding to it."
Cincinnati (16-11, 4-3) made the most of its 10 hits, adding one run off reliever Patrick Hail in the fifth and two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to put the game away, including O'Connor's second home run of the game.
Three of Baylor's first five batters got hits off Bearcat starter Brenden Garula, but the Bears (8-17, 3-7) wasted a pair of two-out singles by Enzo Apodaca and Wesley Jordan in the first inning and then Daniel Altman was gunned down easily at second on a missed hit-and-run signal in the second.
"We didn't have enough innings where we could put any pressure on them and open anything up," Thompson said. "I think when that happens, you've always got to give the other guy credit. At the same time, at the end of the day, the job is to hit, the job is to score more runs than the other guys. And tonight, we didn't get it done."
Seth Logue (1-3), who came in with a bloated 11.95 ERA, kept Baylor scoreless through the first eight innings. The Bears strung together three-straight hits in the ninth and plated three runs, but Christian Mitchelle closed the door with a pair of strikeouts after coming in from shortstop to relieve Logue.
"He threw the ball well and located his stuff. We just didn't get enough quality swings at him," Thompson said. "We had several guys who had good days, and I'm glad to see us respond to score a few runs in the ninth. But like I said, it's about scoring more runs than the other guys, and we didn't do that."
With the flurry in the ninth, Baylor did end up with nine hits – one less than Cincy – including a career-best three-hit day by Jordan. And with Grant Golomb striking out the side in the top of the ninth, four pitchers combined for 13 punchouts.
In Friday's 6:30 p.m. game two, the Bears will turn to junior right-hander Mason Marriott (0-3, 4.50 ERA) to even the series. The Bearcats will go with sophomore righty Tommy Boba (2-2, 6.21).
"We've got to show back up and compete," Thompson said. "That's it, compete and get it done. Mason is going to get the ball tomorrow. He's been our best guy all year, and we need him to go out there and give us a good effort. And then, we need to show up swinging the bats."
The Friday game and Saturday's 1 p.m. series finale will be streamed by Big 12 Now on ESPN+, with Pete Sousa and former Baylor pitcher Pat Combs calling the action.
WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball (8-17, 3-7) was defeated by Cincinnati (16-11, 4-3) on Thursday night, 8-3, at Baylor Ballpark in Waco.
Despite striking out 13 batters and registering nine hits as a team, including a season-high three from junior outfielder Wesley Jordan, the Bears couldn't overcome a couple of big swings by UC in the series opener.
The Bearcats used a three-run home run in the top of the third to open the scoring and never looked back, adding some insurance runs before BU scored its only runs of the night in the bottom of the ninth.
Freshman left-handed pitcher Mason Green took the loss despite striking out a season- and career-high six batters. Senior righty Grant Golomb struck out the side in his lone inning of work. Offensively, junior infielder Hunter Teplanszky, senior infielder Daniel Altman and fifth-year senior infielder Mason Greer provided the RBIs for the Bears in the ninth.
THE RUNDOWN
Green started strong by striking out the side in order in the top of the first, marking just the second time in 2024 that a BU pitcher has fanned the side in order, and used Baylor's league-leading 23rd double play of the season to end a quick second inning.
However, UC got on the board in the third via a three-run home run and threatened for more in the fourth, though Green was able to work out of danger.
In the fifth, an RBI single extended the Bearcats' lead to 4-0 and UC squelched a Baylor threat in the home half as BU left two men on base.
A solo home run and an RBI squeeze bunt added tallies to UC's lead in the top of the seventh and the Bearcats plated two more in the eighth to make it 8-0.
Baylor got on the board in the bottom of the ninth following Teplanszky's RBI double, Altman's RBI single and Greer's RBI fielder's choice, though that's as far as the rally would go as Cincinnati claimed the series opener.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On Mason Green's performance and how to move forward…
"I thought Mason Green threw the ball well, especially early. He was outstanding, you know, striking out the side in the first inning. Four innings, gave up only three hits, but the one big one was a three-run bomb. He struck out six and they kind of ran him out of pitches, it got to the point where we needed to get him out. You know, Friday night we played Texas Tech, they beat us here and it was kind of one of those games that we didn't get enough done. It was disappointing. We showed back up and we won [the next day]. We've got to show back up and compete and get it done. Mason [Marriott] is going to get the ball tomorrow. He's been our best guy all year and we need him to go out there and give us a good effort and then we need to show up swinging the bats."
